Great White Sighting At Nauset Beach Marks 3rd Sighting in 3 Weeks!

Great White Shark Cape Cod Rhode Island

Walter Szulc was kayaking just 100 yards off of Nauset Beach last Saturday when we had the encounter of a lifetime. Szulc, who had just reassured his daughter that the chances of seeing a shark were remote, soon found himself being stalked by a 12 – 14 foot great white shark.  The great white seen in the photo above came within 10 feet of Szulc when a nearby surfer spotted the shark and alerted Szulc to the impending danger.

A crowd of beach goers watched on in horror as the shark closed in on Szulc who was frantically paddling for his life. “I looked back and that’s when the shark was right behind me,” Szulc said. “I just reacted. I thought it was either it or I’m getting in so I just paddled like no tomorrow,” he said. “I kind of ran out of the water like a little child.”

Szulc credits his primal instincts and the surfer for his survival.

Nausett beach was closed for the day but is now open again to the swimming. Beach goers are urged to exercise extreme caution when entering the water.
