Drivers are getting hit at the pump again. The na Drivers are getting hit at the pump again.

The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline jumped nearly 27 cents in just one week, climbing to $3.25 per gallon, as rising tensions in the Middle East push crude oil prices higher.

The spike brings gas prices back to where they were in early April 2025, reversing months of relatively stable fuel costs.

According to new data, the national average now stands at $3.251, up sharply from $2.983 last week and $2.891 one month ago. A year ago, the average price was $3.107.

The last time drivers saw a similar week-to-week surge was March 2022, when Russia’s invasion of Ukraine sent global energy markets into turmoil.

Crude oil prices are now hovering in the mid-$70 per barrel range, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) closing Wednesday at $74.66, up 10 cents during the session.

Seasonal factors are also adding pressure at the pump. Gas prices typically rise in the spring as fuel demand increases and refineries switch to more expensive summer-blend gasoline ahead of the busy travel season.

Even as prices climb, gasoline demand actually fell last week, dropping from 8.73 million barrels per day to 8.29 million, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Domestic gasoline supplies also declined slightly, falling from 254.8 million barrels to 253.1 million barrels, while refinery production increased to 9.3 million barrels per day.

Meanwhile, U.S. crude inventories rose by 3.5 million barrels, bringing total stockpiles to 439.3 million barrels, about 3% below the five-year average for this time of year.

Regional prices vary widely across the country.

The average price for a gallon of gas in Rhode Island sits at $3.158, slightly below the national average, while Florida drivers are paying about $3.353 per gallon.

With geopolitical tensions simmering and the summer travel season approaching, analysts warn drivers may not see relief anytime soon.

A Newport man is behind bars after Rhode Island St A Newport man is behind bars after Rhode Island State Police say his alarming social media posts triggered a federal tip and led to the discovery of illegal weapons.

Authorities arrested 27-year-old Alexander Bestoso of Newport on Thursday following an investigation sparked by information provided by the U.S. Treasury Department in February. Officials said the agency alerted state police to troubling online activity.

Investigators say Bestoso posted anti-government rhetoric, racist content, and threats of violence on his X account, raising concerns among law enforcement.

According to Rhode Island State Police, a review of the account uncovered photos and videos showing Bestoso displaying a firearm he allegedly described as a ghost gun—a weapon that lacks a serial number and is often assembled from parts.

Police said Bestoso also posted videos claiming it was his right to possess illegal firearms and warned that if federal or local authorities “try to come for me,” he would take action against them.

On Thursday, Rhode Island State Police and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) executed a search warrant at Bestoso’s residence on Morgan Street in Newport, as well as his vehicle.

Authorities say they recovered a fully loaded ghost gun, six large-capacity magazines, an AR-style rifle, a pistol, two lower rifle receivers, body armor, and other items.

Bestoso was charged with manufacturing, selling, purchasing, or possessing a ghost or 3D-printed firearm, carrying a pistol without a license, and other weapons offenses.

He was arraigned Thursday and ordered held at the Adult Correctional Institutions (ACI) on $20,000 surety bail.

Police say he is scheduled to return to court for re-arraignment Friday.
