Great news for the kids! Newport Public Schools w Great news for the kids!

Newport Public Schools will remain closed for the rest of the week following the historic blizzard that blanketed the City by the Sea in heavy snow.

School officials said the decision was made to prioritize safety as cleanup and recovery efforts continue across Newport.

“Due to the enormous amount of cleanup and recovery that is still underway — and more importantly our focus on safety for all our students and staff — Newport Public Schools will remain closed for the rest of this week,” the district said in a statement.

The extended closure will give city crews additional time to clear roads, allow residents to shovel out sidewalks and driveways, and provide school staff the opportunity to address snow removal and cleanup at school parking lots and facilities.

City officials have been working to clear primary roads, with side streets still in progress in some neighborhoods after what leaders described as a historic snowfall.

District leaders said they hope to resume normal operations next week.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience and support as all of us continue our focus on safety while we address this historic snowfall and work together to get a fresh start for next week,” the statement said.

Families are encouraged to monitor official school communications over the weekend for updates and any additional information.

In the meantime, officials are urging residents to stay safe as cleanup efforts continue citywide.

NEWPORT, R.I. — The Fifth Ward was buzzing Tuesday NEWPORT, R.I. — The Fifth Ward was buzzing Tuesday as residents dug out from this week’s blizzard, with plows continuing to clear main roads while side streets remained snow-covered.

City crews focused on keeping major arteries passable, carving wider lanes and pushing back towering snowbanks left behind by the storm. But on neighborhood side streets, packed snow and icy patches lingered, slowing traffic and keeping many cars parked.

Despite the mess, the mood was upbeat.

Neighbors were out early with shovels and snowblowers, clearing sidewalks and digging out cars. Some stopped to chat in the cold, turning the post-storm cleanup into a neighborhood gathering of sorts.

A handful of local businesses reopened their doors, offering a sense of normalcy. Ash Mart, 5th Ward Liquor and Seasons Gas were all open, welcoming residents in need of supplies after days of storm disruption.

The cleanup comes as the city continues broader snow removal efforts across Newport, following mandatory parking bans earlier in the week in areas including the Yachting Village and Kerry Hill neighborhoods to allow crews to push back snow and widen roadways.

Officials have urged residents to use caution on untreated side streets and to watch for ongoing plow operations as crews continue working through remaining trouble spots.

For now, in the Fifth Ward, it’s a mix of snowbanks and shovel blades — and a community steadily digging its way back to normal.

BLIZZARD UPDATE: The City of Newport has lifted th BLIZZARD UPDATE: The City of Newport has lifted the parking ban on Broadway, marking a major step forward in the city’s recovery from the blizzard.

Primary roads are now clear, and snow removal crews continue working through side streets. City officials emphasized that if a residential street has not yet been plowed, crews are actively making their way through neighborhoods.

Ocean Drive remains closed as cleanup continues.

City Hall and Newport Public Schools will be closed Wednesday. Trash and recycling pickup is suspended Wednesday and Thursday.

Officials are urging residents to use caution while traveling, as plows remain active and road conditions may vary on secondary streets.
