A 62-year-old Coventry man is facing felony animal A 62-year-old Coventry man is facing felony animal cruelty charges after police say a severely emaciated dog in his care had to be euthanized and four malnourished puppies were rescued from his home.

The case came to light Jan. 7 when a dog in “severe distress” was brought to the Coventry Animal Pound. The female dog was shockingly emaciated — hips, ribs and spine jutting through her skin. She was lethargic, unable to stand or even lift her head, and bleeding from her hind end.

Vets determined she had suffered prolonged and severe neglect. The damage was so extensive that the only humane option was euthanasia.

Animal Control and police traced the dog back to her owner, Michael J. Beausoleil, and went to his Coventry residence, where they found four puppies also in poor condition — malnourished and dehydrated.

The puppies were taken into custody and rushed for treatment. Unlike their mother, they survived. Authorities say all four have since been adopted.

Beausoleil was arraigned Feb. 11 in Kent County District Court on one felony count of unnecessary cruelty to animals — death resulting — and four misdemeanor counts of unnecessary cruelty tied to the puppies. He also faces a misdemeanor charge related to improper tethering.

He was released on $1,000 personal recognizance bail and ordered not to own any more dogs.

“This behavior is unacceptable and entirely avoidable,” Coventry Police Chief Benjamin Witt said, urging anyone who suspects animal abuse to contact authorities.

Easton’s Beach could be headed for another major c Easton’s Beach could be headed for another major change — this time targeting the bathhouses.

Two years after Newport demolished the longtime snack bar and carousel buildings, a newly released Feb. 2026 facilities report now recommends removing the bathhouse complex as part of a broader resiliency effort.

Consultants evaluating the site found the 17 wooden bathhouses structures — which sit atop an elevated concrete deck — are in poor condition and increasingly difficult to maintain. The complex includes 226 bathhouses, along with upper-level restrooms for renters. Public restrooms are located below.

According to the report, the bathhouses were built with relatively inexpensive materials that have not held up well in the harsh coastal environment. Wood elements are deteriorating, and the lack of proper drainage has accelerated the damage.

The concrete deck beneath them remains structurally sound for now, engineers said, but water pools across the surface due to improper pitch. That standing water is infiltrating the slab and contributing to long-term wear.

Fixing the drainage would require lifting or removing the bathhouses to reconfigure the deck. Cutting drainage openings into the slab could risk damaging embedded steel reinforcement rods, making repairs complex and costly.

“Given that the bath houses must be removed or lifted to address the drainage condition at the concrete deck, and the fact that they are in poor condition and difficult to maintain, it is recommended that the existing bath houses be removed,” the report says.

The recommendation comes as Newport continues reimagining Easton’s Beach following the demolition of the snack bar and carousel. Officials are also weighing dune protection plans costing up to $12M to strengthen the shoreline.

City spokesman Thomas Shevlin emphasized that no final decisions have been made regarding the bathhouses. Any action would require City Council approval.

With the carousel gone and the snack bar already a memory, the bathhouses may be the next piece of Easton’s Beach’s character to disappear — another chapter of the shoreline’s history potentially erased.
