Drupal Connect And IntraCity Geeks Launch Innovative After School STEM Program at Rogers High School

Program seeks to provide access to and help students have fun while discovering latent skills in rocketry, robotics, video game development and computer programming.

STEM educational advancements continue at Rogers High School in Newport, RI. Through a generous grant from Drupal Connect, IntraCity Geeks will run its 60-hour “STEM Fun-0-One” after school program for high school students. Participants will design, build and launch rockets thousands of feet into the air, assemble and program self-thinking robots, assist with programming self-driving remote control cars with artificial intelligence, develop projects using Python and the amazing Raspberry Pi and its many STEM accessories. Students will also learn computer programming with JavaScript and create their own video game.

“We’re impressed by all of the ongoing STEM work at Rogers High School and are excited to add our IntraCity Geeks ‘STEM Fun-0-One’ to their mix. Our program seeks to make rigorous STEM, fun, cool &inspiring”, said Arnell Milhouse, Executive Director of IntraCity Geeks. “After school expanded learning opportunities are important ways to pique the interests of students. Our fun-styled, laboratory learning approach keeps students engaged and turns on their STEM field curiosity gene.”

Parents of students will be invited to watch the students demo project outcomes at specific junctures throughout the program. Students will work in groups, create presentations and present their findings.

The program wouldn’t be possible without funding from Drupal Connect of Newport and its CEO John Florez. Mr. Florez built his successful tech-centered company from the ground up and recognizes the need for students to be engaged in STEM learning. Newport Public Schools continues to demonstrate their goal of improving student outcomes and increasing STEM exposure to students from underserved communities. Diversity and inclusion in the technology field for women and people of color is an important topic, and this program aims to achieve high marks in that regard.
