Marriott says personal information of 500 million guests stolen in data breach

Marriott has disclosed that it has suffered a large data breach and has confirmed that the personal information of up to 500 million guests who made a reservation on or before September 10, 2018 was exposed.

An internal investigation showed that unauthorized access had been occurring since 2014.

For 327 million of the guests, beyond name, address, and phone number, the exposed information includes some combination of:

  • Email address
  • Passport number
  • Gender and birth date
  • Loyalty program account information
  • Reservation date with arrival and departure information

Additionally, for some of these 327 million guests, encrypted payment card numbers and expiration dates were taken.

Not a good week for Marriott. First there is the Marriott boycott because of their plastic containers and now 500 million of their customers have had their data stolen.

If you’re coming to Newport, skip the Marriott and head straight to Gurneys Newport Resort & Marina, Gurney’s is hands down the nicest hotel in Newport and their seaside location on Goat Island with 360° water views and the seclusion of a private island is just a jaunt from the shops and eateries of downtown Newport.
