The New Bedford’s mayor’s office says that the city’s police chief has died.

Chief David A. Provencher passed away Sunday night at 7:30pm at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. The cause of his death was respiratory arrest.

“Tonight the City of New Bedford lost an outstanding police chief and a great man. Our prayers go out to Dave’s family. We will do everything in our power to support them at this most difficult time,” said Mayor Jon Mitchell. “Chief Provencher leaves behind a legacy of a more modern and effective police department and a stronger New Bedford community. I am shocked and saddened by his passing. I will miss him as a colleague and friend.”

The 59-year-old was with the New Bedford Police Department for 35 years. He had served as chief for the last five years.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
