Newport Rugby kicks off their 37th season this Saturday at Fort Adams!

Newport Rugby returns to Fort Adam’s State Park this Saturday at 1pm with a clash against New Hampshire powerhouse, Amoskeag.  Coming off a successful season that took Newport to the New England Championship title game, the club has high expectations ahead of their 9-game season.  President, Chris Behan believes the coaching appointment of Brian Moore will give Newport a significant advantage.  “Brian’s 18-years of experience as a championship winning coach combined with an intimate understanding of the Newport Rugby Club makes him the perfect choice to propel the team to higher levels”, said Behan.

Moore founded and served as head coach of Bishop Hendricken High School rugby since 2000, leading them to several junior New England Championships.  Moore also coached University of Rhode Island’s men’s and women’s rugby teams, which included a National Collegiate Championship in 2006.

Moore said of his appointment, “I am thrilled to be returning to Newport Rugby where I started as a player.  The opportunity to give back to the club and work with a talented group of guys is wonderful.”  With several key veteran players on the verge of retirement Moore is prepared for the challenge ahead.  “The club will field a highly experienced and skilled team comprised of both international and local players, several of which have played with Newport for many years.  My role is to bring them together as a playing group and keep them fit and focused throughout the season.”

The League season runs until mid November against premier Division 2 clubs from New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine.
