Newport Yachting Center’s Great Chowder Cook-Off 2012
Newport RI Great Chowder Cook-Off – Sat, June 2nd from Noon till 6:00 pm.
The Newport Yachting Center’s Great Chowder Cook-Off celebrates it’s 31st year, and is the largest and longest running chowder championship in the country. This year’s field of entrants includes five challengers from Newport, RI – the Hotel Viking, Newport Majestic Cruises, Ocean Breeze Café, The Barking Crab and the Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar.
The Chowder Cook-Off features all-you-can-eat “chowda” from the nation’s best chefs and is open to local, regional and international chefs from
restaurants, catering companies and institutional dining facilities. Chefs compete for ultimate bragging rights and for the coveted titles of “Best Clam,” “Best Seafood,” and “Best Creative” chowder. The top three winners in each category win prize money from a prize pot of more than $13,000.
Chowder Cook-Off attendees will also enjoy the “Clam Cake Chow-Down” eating contest, a Stuffie Recipe Contest, three stages of live music and RIPTA’s Travelin’ Buddies kidSTOPs throughout the site.
“The Hotel Viking, Ocean Breeze Cafe and The Barking Crab are veterans of the Great Chowder Cook-Off and will be looking to put that experience to good use in the ‘Clam’ category,” said Mike Martin, Director of Newport Waterfront Events at the Newport Yachting Center. “They should have reason to be optimistic as Tony’s Cedar Key Clam Chowder of Cedar Key, Florida became a three-time winner in that category last year and cannot enter again so the field is wide open.” Martin added that attendees will enjoy a number of newcomers hoping to thicken the competition, including the Bunratty Manor Hotel from County Clare, Ireland which was crowned champion of the 2011 Irish National Chowder Cook-Off.
Price of admission is $20 in advance or $25 day-of event.
All tickets include FREE admittance to the event for children under the age of 12 as long as a paying adult accompanies them.
