Preservation Society Lecture: Aestheticism & the 7th Regiment Armory

Explore New York City’s landmark Seventh Regiment Armory, the purpose-built, privately funded headquarters for the city’s most elite volunteer militia, completed in 1880. Today it is a rare surviving masterpiece of Aesthetic movement design with interiors by some of the most prominent designers and artists of the day, including Herter Brothers, Pottier & Stymus, and Louis C. Tiffany. Dr. Chelsea Bruner will share insights into the building’s commission and design and how it reveals new ways of understanding how aestheticism functioned for elite patrons in the Gilded Age.

Chelsea Bruner is a professor of Design History at Ringling College of Art + Design in Sarasota, Florida. Chelsea studied interior design atFlorida State University and worked as a practicing designer for almost twenty years in Miami and New York City. She has a master’s degree in the History of Art & Design from Pratt Institute, and a PhD in art history from the CUNY Graduate Center in New York City. Her work centers on architecture and interiors of the late nineteenth century, with an emphasis on elite patronage and the professionalization of architectural design in the Gilded Age. With Margaret R. Laster, she is co-editor of “New York, Art and Cultural Capital of the Gilded Age,” to be published by Routledge in 2019.
