Preservation Society’s Fall Lecture Series Kicks Off This Wednesday With “Gilded Suffragists”

The Preservation Society of Newport County will present a series of lectures on “Great Ideas of the Gilded Age.” The Fall Lecture Series is sponsored by ALEX AND ANI. Advance registration is required for all lectures, online at www.NewportMansions.org/Learn/Lectures, or by calling 401-847-1851.

The series kicks off on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at Rosecliff, 548 Bellevue Avenue at 6:00 p.m with Gilded Suffragists: How Alva Belmont ReFashioned the Women’s Suffrage Movement by Dr. Johanna Neuman, historian, author and award-winning journalist.

Johanna Neuman’s new book, Gilded Suffragists: The New York Socialites Who Fought for Women’s Right to Vote, begins at Bailey’s Beach in Newport. The book, published by New York University Press, tells the story of New York’s most glamorous women – with last names like Astor, Belmont, Harriman and Vanderbilt – and chronicles their impact on the women’s suffrage movement. Sven Beckert, Professor of History at Harvard University, called Gilded Suffragists “a fast-paced and important work,” one that demonstrates “how women of all classes built one of the most consequential social movements in American history.”

A career journalist who covered the White House, Congress and the State Department for the Los Angeles Times and USA Today, Dr. Neuman is also the author of an earlier book, Lights, Camera, War: Is Media Technology Driving International Diplomacy?   Dr. Neuman is a former president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, and a former Nieman fellow at Harvard University. Now a scholar-in-residence at American University, Dr. Neuman lives in Delray Beach, Florida.

A book signing will follow the lecture.

Admission is $10 for Preservation Society members, $15 for the general public.  Advance registration is required.
