RIP Theodore Barboza Amado

Theodore B. Amado Sr., “Papa Ted” passed away August 20, 2018 in Portsmouth, RI while surrounded by his wife of 54 years, Lorraine Furtado Amado, his family and his two closest friends of over 50 years Milton (Mickey) and Judy Metzler.

Born Theodore Barboza Amado in Newport on December 29, 1930 he was a resident of the 5th Ward for over 55 years and a graduate of Rogers High School where he was a member of their marching band. Ted was known for his kind heart, soft spoken nature and selflessness. Ted loved spending time and traveling with his family and friends. Even though Ted was a full-blooded Cape Verdean, he looked forward to attending the Annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in Newport. Ted was blessed with a large family and many close friends and spent his final years of his life living in Bonita Springs, FL.

Ted served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Upon return from his military service, Ted worked tending bar at his family’s business on Long Wharf – Leo’s First and Last Stop which he later became part owner of. He then went on to become part owner of Popples Shoe Store as well as form his own painting company A.T.L. Painting. He is a member of the Cape Verdean Club where he served as the Vice President. He was a parishioner of St. Augustine’s church.

He was the son of the late Leo B Amado and Candida Monteiro Amado. Ted is predeceased by his first wife the late Dorothy Sousa Amado, 7 brothers – Walter, Jackie, Leo Jr. (Putchin), Benjamin, William (Billy), Nelson and Joe-Joe and 1 sister Florinda (Flora) as well as his infant daughter Brenda and his beloved grandson John (J.T.) Weiderman. Ted is survived by his loving sister Amelia (Che Che) Ferreira of Newport, his 4 children, Robert Amado and Sandra Mehner Bissonnette of Middletown, RI, Lisa Amado of Newport RI, Ted Jr. of Naples FL, and Dawnie Amado Desmarais and Jim Leavitt of NH. Ted is survived by his loving grandchildren Mikey Weiderman, Rhiana Desmarais and Bryce Desmarais as well as two great grandchildren Brian Williams and Little John Weiderman, 12 nieces/nephews, 23 great nieces/nephews, and 26 great-great nieces/nephews.

Calling hours will be Thursday, August 23, 2018, from 4:00-7:00pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 24, at 9:00am from the Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Augustin’s Church, Carroll Ave, Newport. Burial will be private.
