8-Year-Old Portsmouth Boy Celebrates Final Day of Cancer Treatment with Hero’s Welcome

After more than 800 days of battling cancer, 8-year-old Grant Dion received a hero’s welcome Monday as he marked the end of his treatment at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

The Portsmouth Police Department led a celebratory motorcade escorting Grant from the hospital to Saint Philomena School of the Sacred Heart, where classmates, teachers, and staff greeted him with cheers, bells, and heartfelt applause.

“Prayers answered!” the school posted on Instagram. “As a community, we’ve been praying for Grant since he began his fight with childhood cancer in the spring of 2023. We are truly overjoyed with his family that he can celebrate the completion of his treatment!”

The celebration was made possible with the help of Enzo’s Escorts, local police and fire departments, and dozens of well-wishers who came out to show support.

The Portsmouth Police Department echoed the sentiment on social media: “We were proud to stand with his family, our law enforcement partners, and the greater community in recognizing Grant’s journey. Thank you to everyone who helped make this day memorable for Grant and his loved ones.”

Though Grant’s treatment has ended, the prayers from his school community continue. “We will be forever grateful that God led him through his treatment,” the school shared.
