Block Island, RI

Block Island Ranked Among Top 5 Underrated U.S. Travel Destinations

Block Island has officially earned its spot on the national radar. The coastal gem off the coast of Rhode Island has been named one of the Top 5 Most Underrated Travel Destinations in the U.S. by U.S. News & World Report.

Coming in at No. 5 on the list, Block Island was praised for its natural beauty, low-key charm, and lack of crowds. The annual ranking, which factors in editor insight, reader votes, and available attractions, aims to spotlight lesser-known vacation spots that deserve more attention.

Unlike the buzz of nearby Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard, Block Island offers a slower, more peaceful escape. The island features 17 miles of mostly undeveloped coastline, with beach options ranging from the dramatic cliffs of Mohegan Bluffs to the laid-back Crescent Beach. Visitors can also explore the island’s Southeast and North lighthouses, bike scenic coastal roads, or check out local marine life at the Block Island Maritime Institute.

One of the island’s most unique attractions is the Glass Float Project—a public art scavenger hunt that invites visitors to search for hand-blown glass orbs hidden across the island’s beaches and trails. If you find one, it’s yours to keep.

“Block Island is the perfect place for people looking to disconnect and recharge,” U.S. News editors noted. “It offers stunning views, outdoor adventure, and a sense of discovery without the crowds.”

Block Island joins four other destinations in the publication’s 2025 list of underrated travel spots across the country:

  1. St. Simons Island, Georgia – A historic and scenic barrier island known for its moss-draped oaks, charming village, and wide beaches.

  2. Sawtooth National Recreation Area, Idaho – A vast and rugged wilderness perfect for hiking, fishing, and unplugging from the modern world.

  3. Door County, Wisconsin – A Midwest treasure with quaint towns, cherry orchards, and 300 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline.

  4. Chattanooga, Tennessee – A revitalized riverfront city with mountain views, outdoor activities, and a growing arts scene.

  5. Block Island, Rhode Island – A peaceful Atlantic hideaway with stunning bluffs, bike paths, lighthouses, and hidden glass floats.

Whether you’re looking for a quiet beach town, mountain escape, or small-city adventure, this list offers a fresh take on where to travel next—without the crowds and high prices of typical tourist traps.
