The Aquidneck Island Police & Fire Hockey Club wil The Aquidneck Island Police & Fire Hockey Club will host a community benefit hockey game on Sunday, Feb. 22, to support Mary Jane “MJ” Milici of Portsmouth, who is courageously battling MELAS, a rare and serious mitochondrial disease.

The event, titled “United for Mary Jane,” will take place at St. George’s Ice Rink in Middletown. Doors open at noon, with puck drop at 1 p.m. Organizers say 100% of the proceeds will go directly toward MJ’s medical care and to support her family during this critical time.

Milici has been fighting MELAS for years, but her condition took a serious turn last month while she was in Florida visiting family. She was admitted to the Neuro ICU at Tampa General Hospital after suffering a collapsed lung, pneumonia, and multiple infections.

Earlier this week, after returning to Massachusetts, MJ suffered a stroke. With the help of generous donors, a medical air flight was secured, and she was transported on Super Bowl Sunday to Massachusetts General Hospital. She is now in the Neuro ICU at Mass General, where she continues to receive specialized care.

Members of the Aquidneck Island Police & Fire Hockey Club say the benefit game is about rallying the island community around MJ and her loved ones during an extraordinarily difficult time.

“This is about more than hockey,” organizers said. “It’s about showing up for a family that needs its community right now.”

The suggested entry donation is $10 per person or $20 per family. Those unable to attend are encouraged to donate or keep MJ and her family in their thoughts and prayers.

The club, made up of first responders from across Aquidneck Island, regularly hosts charitable events, but organizers say this one carries special meaning.

“When someone in our community is hurting, we stand together,” the club said.

Organizers say the goal is simple: to surround MJ and her family with support, hope, and the strength of a united community.

A man who came to support a friend’s son at a high A man who came to support a friend’s son at a high school hockey game is being credited with helping stop a deadly shooting inside Dennis M. Lynch Arena on Monday.

Michael Black of North Smithfield told WCVB he was in the bleachers when he heard what he first thought were balloons popping.

“I heard two shots, and I said, ‘balloons popping,’” Black said in an interview with WCVB. “I heard another popping and recognized it was not a balloon.”

Black said he told his wife and a friend to run, then moved toward the gunfire.

“I just grabbed, went for the gun and I got my hand caught,” he told WCVB.

He said his left hand became lodged in the chamber of the weapon, preventing it from firing again, as other bystanders rushed in to tackle the shooter. During the struggle, additional loaded magazines fell from the suspect’s possession, Black said.

Police identified the suspected shooter as Roberta Esposito of North Providence, a trans woman whom authorities said was born Robert Dorgan. Two people were killed and three others critically injured in the attack.

Black told WCVB that after being restrained, the suspect pulled out a second gun, put the gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger.

Authorities said the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves said “a good Samaritan stepped in and interjected in this scene, and that’s probably what led to a swift end of this tragic event.”

Black said he suffered a hand injury and a burn to his face from an ejected shell casing. He later turned one of the firearms over to responding officers.

Despite being called a hero, Black pushed back.

“That’s not the right definition for me,” he told WCVB. “There’s heroes in my life, and I would definitely not put that definition towards myself.”
