Part-time Newport resident Mark Walter, who bought Part-time Newport resident Mark Walter, who bought Clarendon Court in 2021 for $30 million, is reportedly purchasing the Los Angeles Lakers in a record-setting $10 billion deal, marking the largest sale in U.S. professional sports history. The sale will see the Buss family, who have controlled the franchise since 1979, transfer its majority stake to Walter, a billionaire businessman and CEO of Guggenheim Partners. The transaction surpasses the $6.1 billion sale of the Boston Celtics earlier this year. Walter, whose financial firm manages over $310 billion in assets, is no stranger to the sports world. He currently serves as chairman of the Los Angeles Dodgers and leads TWG Global, a conglomerate with ownership stakes in the Dodgers, Los Angeles Sparks, Chelsea FC, the Cadillac F1 team, and the Professional Women’s Hockey League. Jeanie Buss, who has led the Lakers as governor, will remain in her role following the sale. The Lakers, purchased by Jerry Buss for $67.5 million in 1979, have become one of the most iconic and valuable franchises in global sports. The deal solidifies Walter’s status as a powerhouse in the sports industry. Basketball Hall of Famer and former Lakers part-owner Magic Johnson praised the move on social media, writing, “Job well done to my sister Jeanie Buss for striking an incredible deal… Mark Walter is the best choice and will be the best caretaker of the Laker brand.” Walter’s net worth is estimated between $6.1 billion (Forbes) and $12.5 billion (Bloomberg), and his sports track record includes two World Series wins and 11 division titles with the Dodgers since 2012. Second grade teacher Sybil Grayko of Pell Elementa Second grade teacher Sybil Grayko of Pell Elementary School has been named Newport Public Schools’ Teacher of the Year for the 2025-2026 school year — a well-deserved honor for a beloved educator who’s been inspiring students for over two decades. Grayko, who has taught in the district for 21 years, is known for her energy, compassion, and creative approach to learning. She’s especially passionate about environmental sustainability, incorporating hands-on, project-based lessons to help students understand their role in protecting the planet. In 2018, she was recognized with the Ocean Stewardship Award from the New England Aquarium for her efforts to reduce plastic straw use and raise awareness about single-use plastics. “Newport and our students are very lucky to have such a bright, energetic, and caring teacher,” the School Department said in a statement. “Ms. Grayko lights up a room the moment she enters and makes learning — and being in school — an adventure and fun for all.
