A visit to one of Newport’s historic mansions is A visit to one of Newport’s historic mansions is like a stroll back in time through America’s opulent Gilded Age. At The Elms, the summer experience just got a bit more immersive, as tour ticket holders and Preservation Society members can now dine at the decidedly French-style café, @elmscarriagehouse, located inside the large and lovely Carriage House at the back of the property. The Elms was designed by Horace Trumbauer for coal magnate Edward Berwind and his wife, Julia, and was modeled after the 18th-century French Château d’Asnières outside Paris. Trumbauer built the large, limestone-clad carriage house and stables on the edge of the property, with apartments above for the gardeners and stable hands. Today, absolutely bursting with French charm—its entrance flanked by a gorgeous, ornate fountain and twin staircases—it houses the warm and welcoming café with both indoor and outdoor dining areas, and a lovely lunch menu to match, presented by the Stoneacre Group. Items range from salads and soups to a selection of club sandwiches and pasta dishes. Indulge in a tasty Kaluga caviar dip that you can pair with a glass of Cava, a mimosa, beer, wine, or a bottled cocktail from New York City’s West Village Italian staple, @viacarota. Proper ladies can enjoy tea with fresh-baked macarons or cinnamon swirl coffee cake. On a recent visit, I ordered the lightly creamy—but not thick or pasty—New England chowder, this version studded with leeks and smoky bacon, cubes of potato, and bits of clam, topped with fresh dill. The lobster salad club arrived on the prerequisite three slices of white toast, layered with lightly dressed lobster salad, salty bacon, crisp lettuce, a tomato slice, and herby mayo. It came with a green salad topped with shaved radishes. The Elms was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1996. And if the history doesn’t quite get you there, the newly minted Carriage House Café might just be the ticket to a true taste of the Gilded Age. Former Rhode Island Governor Edward D. “Ed” Di Former Rhode Island Governor Edward D. “Ed” DiPrete, who served the state from 1985 to 1991, died Tuesday on his 91st birthday. Rhode Island Secretary of State Gregg Amore confirmed the news on X, writing, “I’m saddened to hear of the passing of Governor Ed DiPrete. My thoughts are with his family and friends as they navigate this difficult time.” Born in Cranston on July 8, 1934, DiPrete began his public service on the Cranston School Committee, then advanced to the City Council and later became mayor. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1959 before joining his father’s real estate business. A graduate of La Salle Academy and the College of the Holy Cross, DiPrete was elected governor as a Republican in 1984 and served three terms. His administration focused heavily on education and infrastructure. In a statement, House Speaker Joseph Shekarchi remembered DiPrete as a devoted public servant who “left a legacy of devotion to his children and grandchildren.” He added, “His focus on education throughout his career improved the lives of many children.” Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. #rhodeisland #newportbuzz
A new poll from the Pell Center at Salve Regina Un A new poll from the Pell Center at Salve Regina University reveals a sharp partisan divide among Rhode Island voters when it comes to the health of U.S. democracy, the economy, and immigration policy. The survey, fielded by Embold Research from June 16–22, 2025, captured responses from 804 registered voters who participated in the 2024 presidential election. The results underscore how Democrats and Republicans are experiencing what researchers describe as “parallel realities.” More than half of Democrats believe the U.S. is still operating as a democracy, but 80% say it’s not healthy, and 94% believe the country is in a constitutional crisis. Nearly two-thirds (64%) even believe the U.S. has fallen into dictatorship. Only 32% believe the checks and balances system remains strong. Republicans, however, are increasingly optimistic. The number who say democracy is healthy jumped sevenfold since the Pell Center’s June 2024 survey. Most Republicans (83%) say they personally benefited from Trump-era policies, and 93% now support increased border security spending. Party lines also define views on the economy. Three-quarters of Republicans say it’s thriving, while 73% of Democrats believe the country is in a recession. Immigration ranked as the top issue for 58% of Republicans, while Democrats cited Trump and Republicans (66%) and the state of democracy (36%). Independents, who make up a large share of Rhode Island’s electorate, were more mixed in their views. A majority (59%) say democracy is not healthy, and their top concerns include inflation (34%) and immigration (34%). Despite their differences, voters from all parties overwhelmingly support increased federal funding for Social Security and Medicare. “The degree to which the parties disagree—even on whether the economy is thriving or in a recession—is alarming,” said Katie Sonder, who directed the survey.
