These obstinate piles of sooty, crunchy snow still These obstinate piles of sooty, crunchy snow still hanging around put me in a self-imposed state of hibernation. Stops at my usual haunts left me non-plussed, but a recent dinner at a beloved Newport landmark I haven’t visited in way too long was a game changer. With fires crackling, @sardellas_italian was the warm, comfort food hug I needed to bust me out of the cold, gloomy Feb. doldrums.

At Happy Hour as bartender John presented a menu of food and beverage deals and Etta James crooned “I’ll be seeing You” over the sound system, we chatted with fellow patrons and enjoyed a stick-to-your-ribs meal we won’t soon forget. At around 7 p.m. a live jazz trio set up in the front dining room to further elevate the mood.

We snagged bar seats and ordered a brick oven, Loretta Neapolitan pizza off the happy hour list to snack on with a Sardella’s Pinot Grigio and an ice-cold Peroni.

The crispy, chewy Brooklyn-style crust was topped with a layer of tangy sauce and uniformly melted cheese. I had to hold back from finishing it, knowing there were chops and pasta to come.

Sardella’s is famed for Parmesan, Picata and Marsala, lasagna and sides of meatballs. But don’t sleep on Barolo braised beef short ribs or brick oven stuffed Branzino. We went with a thick-cut, bone-in Pork Chop Andriana, draped in a sweet-savory shallot and port wine sauce with crumbled gorgonzola served with a mound of chunky mashies, pronounced by my chop expert as one of the best he’s ever had.

For pasta: An enormous portion of Ravioli Panna Prosciutto, filled with a fluffy, creamy ricotta, bathed in a pecorino cream sauce, flecked with bits of prosciutto. Leftovers happened.

For a nightcap, I watched John make the espresso fresh at the sparkling machine that crowns the bar, producing a frothy, smooth perfectly balanced espresso martini.

On a random Wednesday, a night at Sardella’s was the winter remedy I didn’t know I needed. We practically had had to drag ourselves out of the place. Promise yourself after this next blizzard to go.
A sweeping Rhode Island Attorney General investiga A sweeping Rhode Island Attorney General investigation has identified 75 Catholic clergy credibly accused of sexually abusing more than 300 children over decades inside the Diocese of Providence, exposing what investigators described as years of secrecy and institutional failure.

The report, the result of a six-year investigation reviewing more than 250,000 pages of church records dating back to 1950, found that diocesan leaders often prioritized protecting priests and the reputation of the Catholic Church rather than protecting children.

Investigators say accused clergy were frequently moved between parishes, sent to treatment centers, or quietly removed from ministry instead of being reported to law enforcement — allowing some to remain in positions with access to minors.

The probe also led to criminal charges against four priests — John Petrocelli, James Silva, Kevin Fisette and Edward Kelley. Petrocelli, Silva and Fisette remain awaiting trial in Rhode Island courts. Kelley was later deemed incompetent to stand trial and died in 2022.

The report also highlights clergy tied to Portsmouth Abbey, the Benedictine monastery and boarding school in Portsmouth. Two monks who served there — Father Geoffrey Chase and Father Bede Gorman — have been publicly identified as credibly accused of abusing minors. Chase served at the abbey from 1960 to 2002, while Gorman was there from 1944 to 1985.

Authorities say the true number of victims may be far higher, noting that many survivors never come forward or only disclose abuse decades later.

Investigators contacted nearly 150 survivors during the probe and attempted to reach hundreds more.

The report calls for stronger oversight of clergy, greater transparency from the church, and legal reforms to allow more victims to seek justice.

For the full list of priests accused, comment “shame”
