Rhode Island Gears Up for 9th Annual Quahog Week, May 11-17

Get ready to “shell-ebrate” Rhode Island’s favorite clam. The state’s Department of Environmental Management and the Rhode Island Seafood Marketing Collaborative are launching the ninth annual Quahog Week, running from May 11 through May 17.

The week-long event shines a spotlight on the cultural and economic importance of quahogs—Rhode Island’s official state clam—while promoting local seafood and the hardworking shellfishers who bring it to market.

“Quahog Week is a celebration of Rhode Island’s shellfish industry and the bounty of Narragansett Bay,” said Governor Dan McKee. “It’s a great opportunity to support local harvesters, restaurants, and seafood markets – and enjoy a favorite quahog dish or discover something new.”

Restaurants and seafood markets across the Ocean State will offer special quahog-inspired menu items all week. A full list of participating spots and their offerings is available at seafood.ri.gov.

Quahogs remain a cornerstone of the state’s fishing industry, with over 13.5 million harvested in 2024 by 444 commercial shellfishers—worth more than $3.5 million.

DEM Director Terry Gray highlighted the environmental progress behind the bounty. “Thanks to cleaner waters, stemming from strong investments and environmental laws, more areas are now open to harvest. It’s a great time for both commercial harvesters and families to enjoy quahogging.”

Two free public events will cap the week, with complimentary littlenecks shucked by members of the RI Shellfisherman’s Association and samples from participating restaurants:

  • Wednesday, May 14, 5–7 p.m. at The Guild Warren, 99 Water St., Warren

  • Thursday, May 15, 5–7 p.m. at Narragansett Brewery, 271 Tockwotton St., Providence

Dig in and celebrate the pride of Narragansett Bay.
