RIP Daisy Dwyer

Beatrice Daisy Bone Dwyer, 105, died January 7, 2018 at the Grand Islander Center in Middletown, where she has been a resident for the last several years. She was a former resident of Harrison Ave., Newport for 67 years. Daisy, as she was known, was the daughter of the late Percy E. and Florence L Pomphrey Bone and was born in Newport on October 13, 1912 and lived in Newport and Boston as a child.

Daisy graduated from Rogers High School in 1931 and then Tefft Business School in 1932.  She worked at the Short Line Bus Company upon graduation, taking the bus to Providence every day. After her children were all in school, she worked for Leys Century Store and Newport National Bank, Old Colony Bank, which is now Citizens Bank.

Daisy married the late Philip F. Dwyer on October 12, 1940 and had been married for 65 years when he passed in 2006. Phil and Daisy have 4 surviving daughters, Joan Bernard of Cranston, Natalie Huppee of Bonita Springs, FL, and Elizabeth Grauer and Dorothy Berube of Newport. She leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Daisy is also survived by her late sister’s (Bessie Brewin) daughter, Betty Magnusson, of Chatham, MA as well as many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Her love of her Catholic Faith was a strong part of Daisy’s life. She was participated and contributed always to St. Augustin’s Church all her life and could always be found in the front pew at the 5:00 pm Mass. 

Phil and Daisy were among the first stockholders of Gooseberry Beach. They remained life-long supporters of the beach as volunteers and board members.  Their love of this beach has been handed down to their daughters and grandchildren, who are actively involved as well.

Services for Daisy will be held at O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home in Newport on Thursday, January 11, 2018, from 4-7 pm. A mass will be celebrated at St. Augustin’s Church, Carroll Ave., on Friday, January 12, 2018. Burial will follow at St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown, RI.
