Carrigan Nelson came home to Aquidneck Island on N Carrigan Nelson came home to Aquidneck Island on New Year’s Eve, carried by a police escort and the quiet love of a community that never stopped showing up for her.

She was 24 when she died on Christmas Day at Boston Children’s Hospital, after a seven-year fight with osteosarcoma. Diagnosed in 2019, Carrigan endured surgeries, setbacks and long hospital stays, but she refused to let cancer define her life. She kept singing. She kept advocating. And she kept lifting up other families walking the same road.

On New Year’s Eve, Massachusetts State Police escorted Carrigan to the Rhode Island line, where local police, fire and rescue departments from across Aquidneck Island took over. The procession moved slowly to Memorial Funeral Home.

“Carrigan had a police escort to her island home from Boston Children’s Hospital. Just incredible,” her mother, Tammy, wrote. “Our beautiful angel passed on Christmas Day and is coming home on New Year’s Eve.”

Carrigan stayed in Boston after her death so doctors could perform an autopsy to help advance cancer research. It was her decision. “She was a firm believer in furthering science,” her mother wrote..“It was her final gift in fighting for a cure.” She also donated her corneas, with the hope that someone might one day see the world through her eyes.

Just a week earlier, Carrigan sang with Santa Claus at the hospital — a moment her mother described as unforgettable. Despite having only a small portion of one lung functioning, her voice filled the room. “She told him it was going to be her last Christmas,” Tammy wrote. “He told her that he usually asks children to be more like Santa, but that she already was.”

Carrigan was clear about one thing: she didn’t want people to say she lost her battle. Her family says she believed she won — by staying true to herself, by showing up for others, and by loving her community fiercely.

A Celebration of Life and benefit concert is planned for Feb. 1 at the Wyndham Newport Hotel in Middletown, replacing a traditional funeral at Carrigan’s request. The event will help establish a music and arts scholarship in her memory and support the many charitable causes that mattered deeply to her.
