Two people were killed and three others critically Two people were killed and three others critically injured Monday after a shooter opened fire inside a packed high school hockey game at Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, authorities said. The suspected shooter has been identified as Roberta Esposito of North Providence, a trans woman who police said was born Robert Dorgan. Officials said the shooter is also dead from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The violence erupted during a senior night game at Dennis M. Lynch Arena, where families and students had gathered to celebrate. A heavy police presence surrounded the rink Monday afternoon, with crime scene tape blocking entrances. Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien called the shooting “a terrible tragedy and an act of senseless violence.” “Family and friends were gathered today at a hockey game … to celebrate senior night,” Grebien said. “Instead, an act of senseless violence has taken the lives of two innocent victims, with the suspect taking his own life.” Three additional victims remain hospitalized at Rhode Island Hospital and are “fighting for their lives,” the mayor said. More than 100 witnesses have been interviewed. Police Chief Tina Goncalves said the suspect entered the arena to watch a family member play before opening fire. Authorities recovered firearms at the scene. A bystander intervened as shots rang out, helping bring the incident to a rapid end. “A good Samaritan stepped in and interjected in this scene, and that’s probably what led to a swift end of this tragic event,” Goncalves said. Police were not involved in the suspect’s death. A Valentine’s Day fire tore through the third floo A Valentine’s Day fire tore through the third floor of a Gibbs Avenue home, sending two residents to the hospital and leaving a family displaced after 30 years in the same house. Newport Fire responded at 8:55 p.m. Feb. 14 to reports of a bedroom fire at 41 Gibbs Ave. Crews arrived to find smoke showing from the third-floor gable windows of No. 43. A hose line was advanced from the rear of the building as firefighters launched an initial attack with a water can before a full line was in place. Command confirmed no one remained inside. Primary searches of all floors and the basement were negative. Ladder crews ventilated the roof and dormers to clear heavy smoke as additional units, including Navy firefighters, assisted with overhaul. The fire was declared under control at 9:31 p.m. No firefighters were injured. Portsmouth Rescue transported two second-floor occupants — a man and a woman — to the hospital for smoke inhalation. One patient also suffered burns to the hands and arms. The Red Cross responded to assist four displaced adults, including one with a chronic medical condition requiring ongoing care. In the aftermath, homeowner Sean Roberts said the fire started in his son’s bedroom and spread quickly into the walls before firefighters knocked it down. “Tonight, our lives were turned upside down,” Roberts wrote in a GoFundMe campaign launched after the fire. He said the family’s walls and ceilings were gutted, and his son suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation. The home is currently uninhabitable. Roberts, who says he has been out of work due to severe arthritis, said the family now faces temporary housing costs and extensive repairs. The GoFundMe seeks donations to help cover housing, replace essential belongings and begin rebuilding. PAWTUCKET, R.I. — A father shot and killed members PAWTUCKET, R.I. — A father shot and killed members of his own family during a high school hockey game Monday afternoon at Lynch Arena before turning the gun on himself, authorities said. Two people — including a young girl — were killed. Three other family members remain in critical condition at a hospital. The gunman also died at the scene. Police said the shooting erupted around 2:30 p.m. in the stands as the high school game was underway, sending players and spectators diving for cover. Investigators confirmed the victims were the shooter’s wife and children and are investigating the case as a domestic incident. A livestream of the game captured the chaos as approximately 11 shots rang out inside the arena. Players scrambled from the bench, some abandoning their skates as they pushed through exits. Others vaulted over the boards and rushed toward locker rooms while spectators dropped to the floor. Witnesses said a bystander wrestled one gun from the suspect, but he allegedly had a second weapon. Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves said one child was pronounced dead inside the arena. Another family member later died at a hospital. Three others remain hospitalized in critical condition. City officials said there is no ongoing threat and no additional suspects are being sought. Schools participating in the tournament moved quickly to reassure families. St. Raphael Academy said it had been told none of its students were injured. Coventry’s superintendent confirmed all students were accounted for. Johnston Public Schools said its student-athlete and a spectator were safe. The investigation remains ongoing.
