WARWICK, R.I. — A taste of Rhode Island nostalgia WARWICK, R.I. — A taste of Rhode Island nostalgia is coming to the Warwick Mall.

The mall announced Wednesday that Rocky Point Chowder House will open in the food court in early December, bringing back the beloved flavors of the legendary Rocky Point amusement park, which closed in 1996.

“For most Rhode Islanders, Rocky Point wasn’t just an amusement park, it was a part of growing up,” the mall said in a release. “From the smell of clam cakes wafting through the air to the unmistakable taste of that famous chowder, the park represented carefree summer days, and time spent with family and friends.”

Mall General Manager Domenic Schiavone said the new restaurant aims to rekindle that local magic. “We’re thrilled to bring a piece of Rhode Island history home,” he said.

The Rocky Point Chowder House will serve up the seaside classics that made the amusement park a summer staple — chowder, clam cakes, and plenty of memories — just in time for the holiday shopping rush.

Start 2026 with a splash that makes a difference. Start 2026 with a splash that makes a difference. A Wish Come True will host its 22nd Annual Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge Challenge on New Year’s Day at Easton’s Beach, inviting thousands to dive into the Atlantic Ocean to help grant wishes for local children battling life-threatening illnesses.

The plunge begins at noon on Jan. 1, with participants raising funds to support wish families across Rhode Island, Southeastern and Central Massachusetts, and Eastern Connecticut. Each dollar helps bring joy and relief to children facing medical challenges.

“The Polar Plunge is always an amazing day full of hope and inspiration,” said A Wish Come True Executive Director Mary-Kate O’Leary. “When the community comes together to participate, it shows our wish families they are supported, loved, and never alone during this difficult time.”

This year’s event highlights Nicholas, an 11-year-old from Jamestown who is bravely battling cancer. Between treatments at Hasbro Children’s and Boston Children’s hospitals, Nicholas dreams of a Celtics experience with his family — a wish A Wish Come True hopes to make happen.

With more than 5,000 attendees expected, the annual plunge has become one of Rhode Island’s most beloved New Year’s Day traditions. Participants who raise $100 will receive a Polar Plunge hat, and those who raise $500 will earn a cozy hoodie as a thank-you.

Whether you’re plunging solo, joining a team, or cheering from the shore, this frosty tradition is a chance to start the year by giving hope — and a few shivers — to children and families who need it most.

Sign up online by Jan. 1, 2026, to participate.

The U.S. Mint will strike its final circulating pe The U.S. Mint will strike its final circulating penny Wednesday, officially ending production of the one-cent coin after more than 230 years.

President Donald Trump ordered the move earlier this year, calling the penny “wasteful” as production costs soared to nearly four cents per coin — more than triple its face value. The decision follows decades of debate over the coin’s usefulness in a cashless economy.

“For far too long, the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than two cents,” Trump wrote on Truth Social in February. “This is so wasteful!”

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach will oversee the last minting at the Philadelphia facility, where pennies have been made since 1793 — a year after Congress passed the Coinage Act. The Treasury expects to save about $56 million annually in materials and production costs.

Though production is ending, pennies will remain legal tender and continue to circulate for decades. The Treasury estimates roughly 300 billion pennies are still in existence, far more than needed for commerce.

The decision aligns the U.S. with countries like Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, which have already phased out their smallest coins and round cash transactions to the nearest five cents.

The penny, featuring President Abraham Lincoln’s profile since 1909, has long been a symbol of American thrift — but in an age dominated by digital payments, many see it as a relic of the past.
