ON THIS DAY IN NEWPORT HISTORY — Jan. 20, 1870 🟥✨ ON THIS DAY IN NEWPORT HISTORY — Jan. 20, 1870 🟥✨

A little red light on a little island officially joined the job of keeping Narragansett Bay safe.

The story of the Rose Island Lighthouse starts in the mid-1860s, when Rhode Island was growing and shipping traffic on the bay was picking up fast. Steamship companies were ferrying passengers and freight between Newport, New York, and Boston, and the call went out for a new lighthouse on Rose Island.

Construction began in 1869, with a reported cost of $7,500, and the lighthouse was built on the southwest bastion of old Fort Hamilton. Then came the moment: on January 20, 1870, its fixed red light shone over lower Narragansett Bay for the first time.

Over the years, the lighthouse got louder too: a fog bell was added on August 10, 1885, and later replaced by a fog horn on November 12, 1912. The U.S. Coast Guard took over management in 1941, staying in control until 1970, when the lighthouse was decommissioned. Why? Simple: once the Newport Pell Bridge was completed, the needed navigation aids were placed on the bridge, and Rose Island Light became obsolete.

And behind the scenes were the keepers, including the first keeper, George C. Williams (a Civil War veteran), and Charles S. Curtis, who served the longest, from 1887–1918.

Today, it’s not just a piece of waterfront history — it’s also simply a beauty to look at.
