On Jan. 17th, as we celebrate the birth of Benjami On Jan. 17th, as we celebrate the birth of Benjamin Franklin, one of America’s most iconic founding fathers, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on his lesser-known ties to Newport, RI—a city that quietly played a significant role in the fabric of his life and legacy. James Franklin, Benjamin’s older brother, was a pioneer in colonial printing and journalism. In 1727, James established the Rhode Island Gazette here in Newport, the first newspaper in the colony. Its creation marked a milestone in expanding access to news and ideas in early Rhode Island. While Ben Franklin’s documented visits to Newport were relatively limited, their importance cannot be overstated. As a burgeoning hub of commerce and innovation, Newport was a natural stop for Franklin, particularly in his roles as postmaster general and diplomat. Its strategic location and status as a thriving seaport made Newport an essential link in the colonial postal system—a system Franklin famously overhauled to enhance communication and efficiency throughout the colonies. The Franklin family’s influence left a lasting imprint on Newport. James Franklin’s contributions to the city’s publishing landscape laid the groundwork for Newport’s intellectual and cultural development. Meanwhile, Benjamin’s legacy of innovation and civic improvement continues to resonate, aligning with Newport’s rich history of resilience and reinvention. Today, traces of Franklin’s spirit can be felt in Newport’s historical landmarks and institutions, which celebrate the values he championed: curiosity, innovation, and community. Not to mention, both his brother, James, and his sister-and-law, Ann, are buried in Newport. As we honor Franklin’s birthday, it’s fitting to also recognize Newport’s enduring connection to one of the nation’s most brilliant minds—a connection forged through shared ideals and a commitment to progress. So, on this Jan. 17th, raise a glass to Benjamin Franklin: inventor, diplomat, writer, and occasional visitor to Newport. The city is cracking down hard with new speed cameras popping up across town, the first one is already keeping a watchful eye on Ruggles Avenue near Shields Street. But here’s the kicker: City Manager Colin Kennedy didn’t even bother to check with the council before slapping this camera in place. Talk about going rogue! "This is just another example of the city manager acting unilaterally without consulting the people elected to represent this city," said 3rd Ward Councilor David Carlin. "Decisions like these should be made with input from the council and the community, not by one person playing traffic cop." While officials are spinning the cameras as a “safety measure,” critics smell something fishy. Could this be a cash grab disguised as concern? One thing’s for sure—if you’re caught speeding, you’ll be getting a fine in the mail faster than Colin Kennedy can ignore proper procedure. This is just like two weeks ago when the City Council publicly lambasted Kennedy for brazenly putting up an unauthorized stop sign on The Point without bothering to get their approval. Two outstanding Aquidneck Island high school senio Two outstanding Aquidneck Island high school seniors, Ashley Susan Murphy of Portsmouth and Landon Brentley Resendes of Middletown, have been selected to represent our state at the 63rd United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) in Washington, D.C., March 1–8, 2025! 🇺🇸✨ Murphy and Resendes will join 102 other students nationwide for a week immersed in the workings of the federal government. From meeting senators, cabinet officials, and a Supreme Court justice to exploring public service, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Each delegate will also receive a $10,000 scholarship. Murphy, a senior at Portsmouth High School, is heavily involved in civic activities. She serves as a page at the Rhode Island House of Representatives and as the student liaison for the Governor’s Student Civics Liaison Program, where she helps amplify youth voices in government. At her school, Murphy founded the Politics Club, leads the Model United Nations team, and is treasurer of the Future Business Leaders of America. She plans to study government and law in college. Resendes, a senior at Middletown High School, is the student body president and the student representative to the Middletown School Committee, where he advocates for his peers. He co-founded the school’s Computer Science Club, launched a digital version of the school newspaper, and started “Tech Time with Seniors,” a program offering tech support to older residents. Resendes plans to pursue a law degree and hopes to one day run for public office. The USSYP is guided by a Senate Advisory Committee, which includes prominent lawmakers from both parties. Two rookie Rhode Island State Troopers have been a Two rookie Rhode Island State Troopers have been axed after posting a shocking Snapchat video of a pedestrian’s tragic death on I-95—while laughing in the background. The disturbing footage, captured in October, shows 21-year-old Alex Montesino getting struck and killed by a car. One of the troopers filmed the fatal incident on a cell phone, and the video was later shared on the social media platform Snapchat, sparking outrage. “These recently hired troopers displayed such poor judgment and lacked empathy for this family’s tragedy,” said Col. Darnell Weaver, superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police. “They are no longer employed by the state police, and we will not comment further as they are not employed by the Division.” The troopers, who graduated from the 2024 academy class, were fired for violating state police rules and policies, according to officials. #rhodeisland #risp #police #newportbuzz
In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, The Preser In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, The Preservation Society of Newport County will open the doors of two of its most iconic Gilded Age mansions free of charge on Monday, January 20. The Breakers and Marble House, both designated as National Historic Landmarks and originally built by the Vanderbilt family, will welcome visitors from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the final admission at 4 p.m. While this special offer provides access to the main areas of both estates, it does not include specialty tours such as The Breakers Third Floor Preservation in Progress or Beneath The Breakers.
