Long before Newport became famous for its Gilded A Long before Newport became famous for its Gilded Age mansions and sailing culture, the City-by-the-Sea was already making history.

For more than three centuries, Newport has been the site of remarkable American milestones — from early civic laws and religious landmarks to major sporting events and technological breakthroughs.

Among the earliest was 1657, when Newport operated what is believed to be the first ferry service in the United States, connecting communities across Narragansett Bay.

Just a few decades later, in 1673, the White Horse Tavern was built. Today it remains the oldest tavern building in continuous use in America.

Newport also helped shape civic life early on. In 1687, the city passed what historians consider the nation’s first traffic ordinance, regulating horse-drawn carts in the busy colonial port.

Religious freedom also left its mark on Newport. The Quaker Meeting House, built in 1699, is Rhode Island’s oldest house of worship, while Touro Synagogue, completed in 1759, is the oldest synagogue in the United States.

The city was also home to the Redwood Library & Athenaeum, established in 1745 and recognized as the oldest circulating library in continuous use in the United States.

Newport played a role in the nation’s path to independence as well. On May 4, 1776, Rhode Island’s legislature meeting in Newport became the first of the thirteen colonies to declare independence from Britain.

The city continued breaking ground in the centuries that followed. Newport Country Club hosted the first U.S. Open in golf in 1895, while Newport hosted the first U.S. National Lawn Tennis Championships in 1881.

Newport also staged the nation’s first automobile race in 1895, and in 1904 recorded the first automobile arrest, when a driver was cited for speeding at 15 miles per hour.

From 1930 to 1983, Newport hosted the America’s Cup, turning the city into the center of the sailing world for more than half a century.

The bagpipes are almost back! 🍀 Newport is just o The bagpipes are almost back! 🍀

Newport is just one week away from the 70th Annual Newport St. Patrick’s Day Parade, stepping off Saturday, March 14 at 11 a.m. — rain, snow, or classic Irish sunshine.

The parade begins at Newport City Hall and winds through downtown before finishing on Carroll Avenue near St. Augustin’s Church in the Fifth Ward. Expect about two hours of booming drums, marching bands, waving flags, and plenty of green.

This milestone parade will feature pipe bands, fife and drum corps, reenactors, clown groups, and community organizations, along with police, fire, schools, Scouts, and nonprofits — a true City-by-the-Sea celebration.

The 2026 parade honors Dennis Reddy and Donald Mosher as dedicants, with Michael and Tish Curtis Behan serving as co-Grand Marshals.

Grab your spot along the route — Newport is about to turn emerald again! 🍀
