With only a few weeks to breathe before food fest With only a few weeks to breathe before food fest round 2, it’s nice to give your full belly a little break from big food. After a salad or two, maybe a simple spaghetti marinara night, I swing healthy but cozy, offering a last nod to that Thanksgiving bird with a veggie- laden soup made with homemade turkey stock and paired with belly friendly, chewy-crunchy sourdough from Mother in Newport. No shame if you didn’t make stock (boxed chicken stock or broth works great), but it’s the easiest, most delicious, economical and healthy “leftover” bonus of the whole holiday. Finding a gut reset on the go is a snap on Aquidneck Island. Start at @sproutandlentil, located in Middletown behind Custom House Coffee, where everything you thought you knew about tasty food will be upended. Chef Carmen Foy’s vegan dishes are a marvel, with all the flavors, textures and colors expected from good food. Every morsel is mind-bogglingly plant based. At @rootonbroadway in Newport, the mission is to offer “thoughtful, approachable, plant-based foods with an emphasis on quality…” The award-winning vegan and vegetarian take-out spot offers a healthy menu of unprocessed foods, whole grains, leafy greens, a multitude of fruits and vegetables, freshly pressed juices, smoothies, bowls, salads, toasts and sandwiches, all fresh, filling and healthy. @driftcafenpt in Newport is designed for health seekers of all stripes with a menu that caters to vegans, vegetarians and carnivores with whole, organic, unprocessed ingredients, low sugar and no additives. Supplements including spirulina, CBD, collagen peptides are optional add-ons to smoothies and blended smoothie bowls. All-day free range egg dishes and breakfast items, lunch bowls and sandwiches, coffee and craft drinks all represent in the category. The Elms is making a grand comeback for the holida The Elms is making a grand comeback for the holiday season. Starting Saturday, Dec. 7, the historic mansion will reopen to the public as part of the annual Holidays at the Newport Mansions. Expect over-the-top holiday decorations, including Christmas trees, wreaths, garlands, poinsettias, and even displays of antique toys. The reopening of The Elms follows a brief closure as HBO utilized the historic property to film scenes for the third season of The Gilded Age, Julian Fellowes’ Emmy-winning series. While The Elms was shuttered, visitors were treated to a rare opportunity to tour Chateau-sur-Mer, which had not been decorated for the holidays in over two decades. Chateau-sur-Mer will close once The Elms resumes operations, while The Breakers and Marble House will remain open daily, continuing to captivate visitors with their elaborate holiday décor. The Elms, once the summer retreat of the Berwind family of Philadelphia, is a masterpiece of French architecture and Gilded Age luxury. This season, its spacious ballroom will feature an elegantly decorated tree and mantel, while the upstairs Sitting Room will showcase a collection of rare Santa Claus figures from Germany, Russia, and the United States, dating from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. For those intrigued by the behind-the-scenes lives of mansion staff, the Elms Servant Life Tour offers a glimpse into the world of the domestic workers who maintained the lavish estate. This guided tour, available daily at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., explores the servants’ quarters and workspaces but does not include the main mansion areas. Holidays at the @newport.mansions runs through Jan. 1, 2025, offering visitors a chance to experience the grandeur of Newport’s historic homes decked in holiday splendor. All Preservation Society properties will close early at 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve and remain closed on Christmas Day. A months-long investigation by the Newport Police A months-long investigation by the Newport Police Department and the Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) culminated Thursday in the arrest of a Newport resident suspected of possessing child pornography, officials announced. Detectives, working in collaboration with federal agents, executed a search warrant at a local residence on December 5, uncovering evidence that led to the arrest of Ryan McElwee, 23. Authorities allege that McElwee was in possession of child porn. McElwee was arraigned the same day in Second Division District Court, where he appeared before Judge Houlihan. He was released on $5,000 personal recognizance. Residential property owners in Newport can soon re Residential property owners in Newport can soon reapply for the city’s Two-Tier residential tax rate program. The re-enrollment window opens Jan. 2 and runs through March 15, 2025, with approved applications remaining valid for the next three tax years: 2025, 2026, and 2027. The program, introduced in 2022, offers tax savings to eligible property owners and landlords while encouraging year-round residency. For the current year, the tax rate is $6.97 per thousand for residents and $8.22 per thousand for non-residents—among the lowest rates statewide for municipalities offering full utilities and K-12 school districts. Re-enrollment forms will be mailed to existing program participants in mid-December and will also be available online at the city’s website and in hard copy at the Tax Assessor’s Office. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS * Single-family homeowners: Must be Newport residents living at the property for at least seven months per year. * Residential landlords (three units or fewer): All units must be rented year-round as the tenant’s primary residence under a lease of at least one year. Landlords are required to maintain up-to-date 12-month leases on file with the Tax Assessor’s Office. Additionally, applicants must provide proof of residency, such as a Rhode Island driver’s license or voter registration card listing the property as their address. Properties must be titled in the applicant’s name, their trust, or as life tenants with tax payment responsibilities. HOW TO APPLY Applications can be submitted online or in person at the Tax Assessor’s Office. They must include documentation such as a current lease, even if previously submitted. Chafee Boulevard, across the street from the Community College of Rhode Island.
