In our continuing expo of the new generation of ch In our continuing expo of the new generation of charmers wielding cocktail shakers at Newport’s hottest restaurants, we turn to our beloved Clarke Cooke House, whose bench on this front is deep. You have to wonder how General Manager Stephan Boneu does it, assembling such an impressive, competent and unreasonably attractive group of young people. Yet as young as they are, the boys behind the bar at Cooke are nonetheless trained to cater to, as noted on the website, “royalty and yachting stars, captains of industry and charming scalawags” alike. Among an impressive roster, Seth Davis, 23, and Mitch Ventura, 24, are two of the rising stars who earned their stripes at this emblematic Newport food and beverage destination. @Sethdavis_401 grew up in Middletown, @itz.sliccc in Newport, both attending their town’s public schools and finding their way to the restaurant business after odd jobs as youngsters, Davis working at Second Beach, Ventura doing a stint as score keeper for the Sunset League at Cardine’s Field. Both have dreams and plans that include travel. They’re engaging, polite, efficient and both pour a damn good cocktail. The two share something else that’s helped drive them, besides a steady income; a fascination and passion for the people with whom they work. Davis got his start in the business as a teenager, working at the West Deck. His current position on the front lines of the @clarkecookehouse, which began at age 19, is one for which he’s grateful, and he says being a hard worker and a squeaky wheel, consistently asking to do more and be promoted, helped him climb the ladder. Ventura started his Cooke House ascent similarly to Davis, first as a busser, then bar back and food runner, at age 17. Corinthian Yacht Club is making waves at the 2024 Corinthian Yacht Club is making waves at the 2024 Resolute Cup after an action-packed Day 2 on Narragansett Bay. Currently sitting just one point behind the leaders, CYC crew member Miranda Bakos spoke to the intensity of the competition: “No position is ever comfortable. Even if you’ve got a gap, it’s never safe. We’re always defending and fighting to keep boats behind us.” The day saw stunning late-summer weather and ideal conditions for racing, with six races completed and the scoreboard constantly shifting. After two days of fierce competition, 10 different teams have claimed race wins, proving how unpredictable and competitive this regatta truly is. Eastern Yacht Club, sitting in third place, bounced back after a tough first day and is now focused on securing a podium finish. Skipper Alden Reid emphasized the importance of getting clean starts and staying aggressive on the course. The Resolute Cup continues through September 14, with the final day featuring double-point races that could shake up the standings. Police are investigating a potential threat made a Police are investigating a potential threat made against Middletown High School on Wednesday. The school’s superintendent, Billy Niemeyer, wrote a letter late Wednesday that the threat was reported online by students and parents. According to the school district, the police have determined the threat to be non-credible, and classes will proceed as scheduled on Thursday. The Middletown Police Department is still working to trace the origin of the message, which has not been disclosed publicly. Niemeyer emphasized the importance of students reporting any concerns to trusted adults. The district is urging parents to remind their children to speak up if they hear or see something concerning. In a move that will alter traffic patterns in down In a move that will alter traffic patterns in downtown Newport, the City Council approved a Councilman David Carlin’s resolution Wednesday night to reverse the flow on Dixon Street. The new direction will shift traffic from East to West, moving downhill, instead of the previous West to East, which was uphill. The change will result in the loss of five parking spaces on Spring Street and a reduction of 50 feet of parking on Dixon Street. Additionally, traffic is expected to increase on Hammond Street as a consequence. Newport’s brand new City Manager Colin Kennedy noted that Newport’s traffic engineers did not contribute to the discussion at the meeting, citing a lack of time for a thorough review of the change. Councilman David Carlin challenged this explanation, emphasizing that the engineers had over three years to assess the proposal. Carlin, who has advocated for this change on behalf of local residents, argued that the current traffic conditions on Dixon Street pose safety risks. Residents supported the resolution, citing concerns about the dangerous traffic situation. On the other hand, Bari Freeman of Bike Newport opposed the change, arguing that Dixon Street is popular among cyclists and the new flow could impact their travels. Todd Morgan Beamer, 32, was a passenger on United Todd Morgan Beamer, 32, was a passenger on United Airlines Flight 93 during the September 11, 2001 attacks. When hijackers took control of the plane, Beamer, along with other passengers, made a heroic attempt to reclaim the aircraft. During the struggle, the plane lost control and crashed into a field in Stonycreek Township near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Though all on board were killed, their bravery is believed to have prevented a larger catastrophe by stopping the hijackers from reaching their intended target. Beamer is survived by his wife, Lisa, and their children, David and Andrew, who were just three and one years old at the time of his death. His daughter, Morgan, was born after the tragedy. On September 20, 2001, President George W. Bush addressed a joint session of Congress and the American people, highlighting the courage of the passengers on Flight 93. He specifically honored Beamer, calling him “an exceptional man.” In a later address on November 8 from Atlanta, Bush invoked Beamer’s iconic last words, “Let’s roll,” as a symbol of American courage. Gould, a beloved son of the city and a member of the Rogers High School Class of 1990. After graduating from Rogers High School, Mike continued his education at Villanova University, where he pursued his passion for business. His career ambitions led him to Cantor Fitzgerald, a prestigious financial firm in New York City, where he worked as a securities trader. Tragically, Mike was one of the many lives lost in the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. As Newport reflects on the events of that fateful day, the memory of Michael Gould stands as a reminder of the countless lives touched by kindness, generosity, and love—a reminder that even in the darkest of times, the light of those we lose continues to shine.
