New England’s grandiose offshore wind deal, tout New England’s grandiose offshore wind deal, touted as a green energy triumph, may turn out to be a colossal blunder. RI and Mass have just committed to 2,878 megawatts (MW) of offshore wind power in what they claim is a historic procurement. Mass is snagging the lion’s share with 2,678 MW from three projects, while RI is chipping in 200 MW. This move is supposed to power over 125,000 RI homes and 1.4 million Mass homes. But beneath the surface, the fallout could be disastrous. While state leaders celebrate this as a victory for renewable energy, opponents are raising alarms about the harmful effects these projects are having on marine ecosystems. The construction and operation of these enormous wind turbines are being linked to an alarming rise in the deaths of marine animals, including whales and dolphins. The noise and disruption caused by these offshore wind farms are wreaking havoc on the creatures that call the ocean home. Governors Dan McKee and Maura Healey are hailing this deal as a major milestone for clean energy and economic growth. However, the promises of energy independence and job creation are being overshadowed by the grim reality beneath the waves. The damage to marine life is becoming impossible to ignore and the immediate harm to marine ecosystems is too glaring to brush aside. As New England touts its latest achievement in green energy, we must ask: at what cost? The push for renewable energy could be setting a dangerous precedent, sacrificing our oceans for the sake of progress. The environmental impact of these projects paints a much darker picture than the one being paraded by state officials. Renewable energy is vital, but not if it comes at the expense of our marine ecosystems. Captain Todd Silvia, a cornerstone of the Newport Captain Todd Silvia, a cornerstone of the Newport Police Department, has retired after a distinguished 29-year and 5-month career. His departure marks the end of an era for the department and the city he served with unwavering dedication. Captain Silvia, who began his tenure with the Newport Police Department in July 1995, was a graduate of the Police Academy in June of the same year. From the outset, he immersed himself fully in every aspect of policing, serving across all shifts and neighborhoods. In 1996, he joined the Special Response Team (SRT), where his leadership and expertise soon elevated him to a supervisory role. In October 2004, Silvia transitioned to the role of Detective, where he conducted critical investigations until his promotion to Sergeant in March 2005. As a street supervisor, he played an instrumental role in mentoring new officers and managing various patrol divisions over a six-year period. April 2012 saw Silvia advance to the rank of Lieutenant, with his responsibilities shifting to the prosecution unit within the Criminal Investigation Division. His commitment to professional development was further demonstrated by his attendance at the FBI’s National Academy in Virginia in October 2015. By 2016, he had taken command of the Patrol Division, and his promotion to Captain soon followed. In November 2022, he assumed command of the Criminal Investigation Division, a role he held until his retirement. Throughout his career, Captain Silvia earned widespread recognition, including 19 letters of commendation, 10 letters of praise, and the department’s meritorious service award. His contributions have left a lasting impact on the Newport community and the police department. 🚨 Starting this Sunday at 9 p.m., the Rhode Isl 🚨 Starting this Sunday at 9 p.m., the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) will begin demolishing the deck of the old Washington Bridge. Gano Street, where it passes under I-195, will be closed from Sunday through Thursday nights, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., for the next two to three weeks. During this time, expect detours via India Street, Wickenden Street, South Main Street, and South Water Street. The on-ramp to I-195 West at Gano Street will remain open. A full weekend closure of Gano Street is also planned later this fall for beam removal, with dates to be announced. RIDOT is also starting demolition on the East Providence side next week, but no immediate traffic impacts are expected. Be aware of potential lane closures on I-195 for monitoring system upgrades and routine maintenance. Junior linebacker Marc Promutico lit up the scoreboard first with a 35-yard interception return early in the second quarter, sending the hometown crowd into a frenzy. Promutico read Curry’s quarterback like a cheap novel, snatching the pass and taking it to the house, putting the Seahawks up 7-0. The next seven weeks in Newport are the most magic The next seven weeks in Newport are the most magical of the year. The light breezes and cooler, drier air harken autumn days ahead. But hold onto your sweater, pumpkin; don’t rush it. There will be time for apple pies, roasted Brussels, and candied yams, but we will not be talking about any of that until after September 22. These next 14 days usher in the final bounty of summer’s harvest. Bursting-ripe, juicy tomatoes and berries, sweet, crunchy white corn, and the most magnificent swordfish you’ve ever grilled (get it from The Local Catch out of Narragansett and thank me later) are still on the menu. You might want to hustle to savor a few of the following summer must-haves before we turn the page on the season, starting with a blueberry tart of the Gods at Le Bec Sucre, available through the end of September. It’s a flaky, crispy, croissant-like base, topped with pastry cream and mounded with sweet and tart fresh blueberries and if I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times: Belinda’s confections are the best I’ve had outside of Paris. If you haven’t hit @thequenchernewport on Long Wharf yet, any season will do, but while the weather is fine, you absolutely cannot beat the view from the rooftop patio and bar, which overlooks the boats at the Newport Yacht Club. The Italian menu is solid, and there’s a burger here that will absolutely knock your socks off. New to the patio scene is the gorgeous outdoor space at Flora, the new restaurant at The Gardiner House. Within a city that boasts a view a block, this view might be the most enchanting of all. Looking out over the marinas and harbor from this vantage point makes you feel like you could be at any riviera town anywhere in the world. Get the tuna carpaccio and an aperitif at the bar and take it all in, or reserve a table. Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier with a special presentation on September 12, 2024. The event, aptly titled “Return to Camelot,” will be held at 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. The presentation promises a nostalgic journey back to September 12, 1953, the day when Jacqueline Bouvier and then-Senator John F.
