EXETER, R.I. - The Rhode Island Department of Envi EXETER, R.I. - The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is reminding everyone that shotgun deer season kicks off Saturday, Dec. 6, and if you’re heading into state management areas or undeveloped state parks, you’d better be rocking bright orange like it’s high fashion.

From now through Friday, Jan. 2, anyone walking, hiking, or wandering through these areas must wear 500 square inches of solid fluorescent orange above the waist — think vests, jackets, and hats loud enough to be seen from space. DEM says the rule is simple: stay safe, stay visible, and stay stylish.

There are a few exceptions. Archers in archery-only areas are allowed to stay camouflaged, and waterfowl hunters hunkered in blinds or boats with decoys don’t need to suit up in orange either.
Rhode Islanders looking for the fine print — hunting dates, rules, or where exactly the Deer Management Zones fall — can check out the full 2025-26 Hunting and Trapping Regulation Guide at:
www.eregulations.com/rhodeisland/hunting

And for the full breakdown on when and where you need to sport blaze orange, visit:

Bottom line: If you’re heading into the woods this month, dress like a traffic cone. It could save your life — and it’s the law.

The Trump Department of Justice has filed a federa The Trump Department of Justice has filed a federal lawsuit against Rhode Island Secretary of State Gregg Amore after he refused to turn over the state’s complete voter registration list, a request the DOJ says is required under federal law to ensure voter rolls do not contain ineligible voters, including noncitizens.

The DOJ first asked Amore on Sept. 8 to provide a “current electronic copy” of the statewide voter list, including names, dates of birth, addresses, and driver’s license or Social Security information. The agency said the records would be protected under the Privacy Act. Amore rejected the request a week later, claiming state law prevents him from releasing personally identifiable information.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi said, “Accurate voter rolls are the cornerstone of fair and free elections, and too many states have fallen into a pattern of noncompliance with basic voter roll maintenance. The Department of Justice will continue filing proactive election integrity litigation until states comply with basic election safeguards.”

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon added, “Our federal elections laws ensure every American citizen may vote freely and fairly. States that continue to defy federal voting laws interfere with our mission of ensuring that Americans have accurate voter lists as they go to the polls, that every vote counts equally, and that all voters have confidence in election results. At this Department of Justice, we will not stand for this open defiance of federal civil rights laws.”

According to the DOJ, the Attorney General is charged by Congress with enforcing the National Voter Registration Act and the Help America Vote Act, as well as the Civil Rights Act of 1960, which allows the federal government to demand, inspect, and analyze statewide voter lists.

Rhode Island is one of at least 14 Democratic-led states facing similar lawsuits.

The DOJ is asking a federal judge to declare Amore in violation of federal law and to order him to hand over the records within five days. Amore has called the suit unconstitutional and vowed to fight it.
