As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, a As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, a panel of Rhode Island historians and preservation leaders will gather at Rosecliff to consider how the state’s past informs the country’s future. The program, “America 250 and Beyond: Perspectives from Preservation Leaders,” will be presented Feb. 12 from 6 to 7 p.m. by the Preservation Society of Newport County and moderated by its chief executive, Trudy Coxe. A reception begins at 5:30 p.m., and the discussion will also be available by video conference. Bringing together leaders of several of the state’s most prominent historical institutions, the panel will examine how commemorations tied to the semiquincentennial may shape preservation priorities, public memory and efforts to broaden the stories told about the American past. Participants include Rhode Island Secretary of State Gregg Amore; Rebecca Bertrand of the Newport Historical Society; C. Morgan Grefe of the Rhode Island Historical Society; Paul Marshall of the Fort Adams Trust; Lorén M. Spears, enrolled Narragansett Tribal Nation citizen and Executive Director of Tomaquag Museum; and Gina Tangorra of the Newport Restoration Foundation. Organizers say Rhode Island, though the nation’s smallest state, played an outsize role in the Revolutionary era and continues to wrestle with how its layered history is interpreted and preserved. The anniversary, they suggest, offers both a moment of reflection and a prompt for more inclusive storytelling. “This milestone anniversary year is a reminder of the many ways our nation’s revolutionary spirit continues to influence our identity today,” Coxe said. “It is an opportunity to look ahead toward the future we want to create for the next generation while honoring the contributions of all Americans.” Tickets are available through NewportMansions.org/events. #america250 #newportmansions #newportbuzz
Rhode Island House Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi wil Rhode Island House Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi will not run for governor, ending months of speculation and narrowing the Democratic primary field. “After deep personal reflection, I have decided to continue to serve as Speaker of the House and will not be a candidate for Governor this fall,” the Warwick Democrat said Tuesday. Shekarchi, 63, had publicly weighed a run and said he would decide in early 2026. His move leaves Gov. Dan McKee and former CVS executive Helena Foulkes as the best-known Democrats in the September primary. Shekarchi said his focus will remain on the state budget and “critical issues like health care, hospitals and housing.” He has led the House since 2021 and is often viewed as one of the most influential elected officials at the Statehouse. Despite stepping aside, Shekarchi holds a sizable campaign account, reporting nearly $4.4 million cash on hand. McKee has about $1.1 million, while Foulkes has roughly $2.8 million. McKee praised the speaker and framed the race as a contrast in priorities. “I appreciate the work and dedication Speaker Shekarchi has shown to Rhode Islanders,” McKee said in a statement, calling him a strong partner on health care, education and housing. The governor said voters now face “a clear choice” and argued he is focused on lowering costs, including eliminating the Social Security tax, creating a child tax credit and reducing energy bills. Foulkes, who narrowly lost the 2022 Democratic primary, has rebuilt her campaign operation and fundraising. Owner Robert Kraft was not chosen for the Class of 2026 in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, according to multiple league reports, a decision that leaves one of the most successful owners in NFL history still waiting for a gold jacket. Kraft, a first-time finalist, did not receive enough votes from the Hall’s 50-member selection committee. The outcome means the man who reshaped the Patriots franchise and oversaw one of the greatest dynasties in professional sports will not be inducted this year. The résumé is difficult to ignore. Since purchasing the Patriots in 1994, Kraft has guided the franchise to 374 wins, compared with 225 before his ownership. New England captured six Super Bowl championships and made 10 Super Bowl appearances under his leadership — the most by any owner in league history. Kraft hired Belichick in 2000 and built the organizational structure that sustained two decades of dominance in the salary-cap era. His impact extended beyond Foxborough, serving on influential league committees and helping navigate the NFL through the 2011 labor negotiations. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has said he believes Kraft will eventually be enshrined. Patriots coach Mike Vrabel called him “more than deserving.” Still, the vote says wait. The decision comes in a season where New England’s championship legacy is once again in focus. Yet the owner who stabilized the franchise, financed its rise and presided over six Lombardi Trophies remains outside Canton. For now. The banners hang. The rings exist. The wins are recorded.
