Emergency personnel were dispatched to Building 9C around 10:30 a.m. Friday following reports of a potential threat. Electric Boat swiftly activated its established emergency procedures, evacuating the affected area to ensure the safety of its employees. State, local, and federal authorities joined the response effort, conducting a meticulous sweep of the building. Officials confirmed that no explosive device was found. “There was no danger to the general public at any time,” a spokesperson for Electric Boat said. Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson has Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson has been arrested and indicted on charges of wire fraud and theft of public funds. Federal prosecutors allege she orchestrated a kickback scheme to divert thousands of taxpayer dollars for personal use. According to the indictment, Fernandes Anderson awarded a $13,000 bonus to a staff member under the condition that they return a large portion of the money to her in cash. Investigators say the alleged handoff happened in a City Hall bathroom in June 2023, where the staffer gave Fernandes Anderson $7,000 in cash. The councilor, who represents District 7, has also faced prior ethical violations. In 2022, she hired two immediate family members in violation of city rules, leading to a $5,000 fine earlier this year from the Massachusetts Ethics Commission. Prosecutors claim she also falsely represented her relationship to another staffer to secure their city employment. U.S. Attorney Joshua Levy condemned the alleged actions, saying, “This is a betrayal of public trust and a violation of her duty as an elected official.” FBI officials described the behavior as “a slap in the face to Boston taxpayers.” Fernandes Anderson, who was first elected in 2021 and recently re-elected in 2023, faces up to 20 years in prison for each count of wire fraud and up to 10 years for theft charges if convicted. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents na U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents nabbed a Guatemalan man accused of sexually assaulting a child after Rhode Island officials let him slip through their fingers. Felix Meletz Guarcas, 45, was arrested by ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) team on Nov. 20 in a Cranston parking lot, after the Rhode Island Department of Corrections released him to home confinement, despite an active immigration detainer. “We use immigration detainers as public safety tools,” said Patricia H. Hyde, acting Field Office Director for ERO Boston. “Unfortunately, the Department of Corrections doesn’t notify us about home confinement releases. As a result, we had to apprehend him in a public space, rather than a secure environment.” Meletz Guarcas, who reportedly entered the U.S. illegally, has a disturbing rap sheet. In September, Providence police arrested him on multiple counts of first- and second-degree sexual assault of a child. Those charges are still pending. His history with law enforcement dates back decades. In 2002, Pawtucket police arrested him for disorderly conduct and felony assault on police officers. He was convicted and sentenced to six months of probation. Now in ICE custody, Meletz Guarcas is awaiting a hearing before an immigration judge. ERO, tasked with enforcing immigration laws and removing dangerous individuals, criticized the handling of the case by local authorities. ICE officials argue the release of individuals subject to immigration detainers undermines public safety. The Elms is making a grand comeback for the holida The Elms is making a grand comeback for the holiday season. Starting Saturday, Dec. 7, the historic mansion will reopen to the public as part of the annual Holidays at the Newport Mansions. Expect over-the-top holiday decorations, including Christmas trees, wreaths, garlands, poinsettias, and even displays of antique toys. The reopening of The Elms follows a brief closure as HBO utilized the historic property to film scenes for the third season of The Gilded Age, Julian Fellowes’ Emmy-winning series. While The Elms was shuttered, visitors were treated to a rare opportunity to tour Chateau-sur-Mer, which had not been decorated for the holidays in over two decades. Chateau-sur-Mer will close once The Elms resumes operations, while The Breakers and Marble House will remain open daily, continuing to captivate visitors with their elaborate holiday décor. The Elms, once the summer retreat of the Berwind family of Philadelphia, is a masterpiece of French architecture and Gilded Age luxury. Detectives, working in collaboration with federal agents, executed a search warrant at a local residence on December 5, uncovering evidence that led to the arrest of Ryan McElwee, 23. Authorities allege that McElwee was in possession of child porn. McElwee was arraigned the same day in Second Division District Court, where he appeared before Judge Houlihan.
