America celebrates its 250th anniversary this year America celebrates its 250th anniversary this year, and Rhode Island leaders gathered at Rosecliff on Feb 12 to discuss plans. Trudy Coxe led a conversation with Secretary of State Gregg Amore, Rebecca Bertrand, Morgan Grefe, Paul Marshall, Lorén Spears, and Gina Tangorra.

The program opened with a land acknowledgment honoring the Narragansetts and Wampanoags. Coxe noted Rhode Island was the first colony to declare independence and urged residents to remain as “feisty” about preservation, calling it “a responsibility, not merely nostalgia.”

“Rhode Island was first out and last to ratify the Constitution,” agreed Amore, suggesting the anniversary offers an opportunity to revisit the founding document and find unity in its principles especially the second sentence establishing the nation.

Grefe noted that history is often “fraught and complicated.” She emphasized examining “what we have forgotten,” a theme the RI Historical Society is exploring with its Saturdays in the 1700s program.

Including previously omitted stories is also central to the work of Spears from the Tomaquag Museum. She highlighted the presence of Indigenous soldiers in the 1st RI Regiment and discussed the intrigue surrounding Roger Williams and the intel he brought back to the colonists.

Tangorra said collaboration defines the year for the Newport Restoration Foundation and recalled challenges following the Navy’s departure in 1973 and the redevelopment of the city. Today the foundation stewards 70 colonial-era homes with restored, livable 18th-century floor plans maintained by tenant stewards.

A major new addition to Newport will be The Edward W. Kane & Martha J. Wallace Center for Black History, which Bertrand said will open on Juneteenth. The Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House will feature exhibits on the Black experience past and present, including an African Spirit Bundle discovered beneath the building’s floorboards.

Marshall shared news of a tour relaunch at Fort Adams, following eight years of restoration. “The area was the kitchen and latrines, so every soldier used it,” Marshall joked, describing the fort as a place where military history, preservation, and immigration intersect.

NEWPORT, R.I. — Minimalism and monumental sculptur NEWPORT, R.I. — Minimalism and monumental sculpture will take center stage at Rosecliff on Friday, March 6, when The Preservation Society of Newport County hosts a panel tied to its current “Full Circle” exhibition.

The discussion, titled “An Inside Look at the ‘Full Circle’ Exhibition,” begins at 6 p.m. and explores the legacy of Monumenta, the groundbreaking 1974 outdoor exhibition that brought large-scale modern sculpture to Newport. The show featured major artists and helped shape conversations around minimalism and public art that continue today.

The panel includes original Monumenta artist Richard Fleischner and contemporary artist Uri Aran. The conversation will be moderated by Natalie Bell, chief curator at the MIT List Visual Arts Center.

Organizers say the program offers an insider’s look at the vision behind Monumenta and its influence on contemporary art over the past five decades.

A reception will follow the lecture, and the Rosecliff galleries will remain open for attendees.

Rosecliff is located at 548 Bellevue Ave. Tickets are available at www.NewportMansions.org/events
