Newport has slapped a mandatory citywide parking b Newport has slapped a mandatory citywide parking ban ahead of a monster blizzard expected to dump up to 2 feet of heavy, wet snow and unleash powerful winds and coastal flooding.

The ban kicks in Sun., Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. and runs until further notice, as officials brace for a high-impact winter storm.

Residents must clear their cars off city roadways or risk getting towed. Free parking is available at the Gateway Center, Mary St. and Touro St. lots. Neighbors are encouraged to share driveway space to keep vehicles off the streets.

🚨 Tow Zone Streets

Any vehicle left on the following streets one-half hour after the ban begins will be towed:

Annandale Rd.; Bellevue Ave. (Kay St. to Bowery St.); Bedlow Ave.; Bliss Rd.; Broadway; Coggeshall Ave.; East Bowery St.; Farewell St.; Friendship St.; Gibbs Ave.; Gould St.; Kay St.; Powell Ave.; Spring St.; Summer St.; Thames St.; Third St.; Warner St.; Washington St.; Washington Sq.; West Marlboro St.; West Narragansett Ave.; William St.; and Van Zandt Ave. (J.T. Connell Memorial Rd. east to Malbone Rd.).

Yachting Village enforcement: Ann St.; Pope St. (Spring St. to East St.); Anthony St.; Fountain St.

Fifth Ward enforcement: Carroll Ave. (Morton Ave. to Ruggles); Old Fort Rd.; Harrison Ave. (Carroll Ave. to Halidon Ave.).

Forecasters are calling for 18–24 inches of heavy, wet snow, fierce winds and possible coastal flooding. Whiteout conditions could make travel nearly impossible.

Newport Public Schools and City Hall will be closed Monday. Trash pickup is delayed at least one day.

A regional emergency shelter opens at Gaudet Middle School in Middletown at 4 p.m. Sunday. Residents needing assistance can dial 2-1-1.

City officials warn street and bridge closures are possible. After the storm, property owners must shovel adjacent sidewalks within five hours.

Move your car. Charge your phone. Stay off the roads.

A monster blizzard is barreling toward southern Ne A monster blizzard is barreling toward southern New England, threatening to dump up to 2 feet of snow and unleash 60 mph wind gusts from Sunday afternoon through early Tuesday.

The Blizzard Warning takes effect at 4 p.m. Sunday and runs until 7 a.m. Tuesday, targeting eastern, northeastern and southeastern Massachusetts along with northern and southern Rhode Island — including the heavily traveled Boston-to-Providence corridor.

Snow ramps up after 7 p.m. Sunday, with 6 to 10 inches possible overnight as winds intensify out of the northeast. Gusts could hit 50 mph before midnight, whipping falling snow into blinding whiteouts.

By Monday, the storm cranks into high gear.

Forecasters are calling for another 10 to 14 inches during the day, with a brief rain mix possible before flipping back to heavy snow. North winds could howl up to 55 mph, dropping visibility below a quarter mile and hammering both the morning and evening commutes.

Monday night brings lingering snow — another 1 to 2 inches possible — while blustery northwest winds keep conditions dangerous.

Officials warn the combination of heavy, wet snow and powerful gusts could snap tree limbs, down power lines and spark widespread outages. Areas of fog and freezing fog overnight may make matters even worse.

Residents are being urged to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. Travel could be “very difficult to impossible.” Anyone who must head out should carry a winter survival kit — and stay with their vehicle if stranded.

Bottom line: New England is about to get buried.
