The sound of bagpipes is almost back. Newport is The sound of bagpipes is almost back.

Newport is officially just one month away from a landmark celebration — the 70th Annual Newport St. Patrick’s Day Parade — stepping off Saturday, March 14, 2026, at 11 a.m., come rain, snow, or classic Irish sunshine.

The march begins at Newport City Hall and makes its way through downtown before finishing on Carroll Avenue near St. Augustin’s Church in the Fifth Ward. Expect about two hours of marching bands, booming drums, waving flags, and plenty of green.

This 70th edition promises a full slate of pipe bands, fife and drum corps, marching units, reenactors, and crowd-favorite clown groups. Local and regional organizations will line up alongside police and fire departments, schools, Scout troops, nonprofits, and fraternal societies — a true cross-section of the City-by-the-Sea.

As always, the parade is held the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day (unless March 17 falls on a Saturday), a tradition that generations of Newport families have marked on their calendars for decades.

The 2026 parade is dedicated to Dennis Reddy and Donald Mosher as co-dedicants. Serving as co-Grand Marshals are Michael and Tish Curtis Behan, honored for their longstanding commitment to the community.

With just weeks to go, now’s the time to plan your spot along the route and prepare for road closures. Newport will soon turn emerald once again — and for a few lively hours, the Fifth Ward will feel like the heart of Ireland. 🍀

A 62-year-old Coventry man is facing felony animal A 62-year-old Coventry man is facing felony animal cruelty charges after police say a severely emaciated dog in his care had to be euthanized and four malnourished puppies were rescued from his home.

The case came to light Jan. 7 when a dog in “severe distress” was brought to the Coventry Animal Pound. The female dog was shockingly emaciated — hips, ribs and spine jutting through her skin. She was lethargic, unable to stand or even lift her head, and bleeding from her hind end.

Vets determined she had suffered prolonged and severe neglect. The damage was so extensive that the only humane option was euthanasia.

Animal Control and police traced the dog back to her owner, Michael J. Beausoleil, and went to his Coventry residence, where they found four puppies also in poor condition — malnourished and dehydrated.

The puppies were taken into custody and rushed for treatment. Unlike their mother, they survived. Authorities say all four have since been adopted.

Beausoleil was arraigned Feb. 11 in Kent County District Court on one felony count of unnecessary cruelty to animals — death resulting — and four misdemeanor counts of unnecessary cruelty tied to the puppies. He also faces a misdemeanor charge related to improper tethering.

He was released on $1,000 personal recognizance bail and ordered not to own any more dogs.

“This behavior is unacceptable and entirely avoidable,” Coventry Police Chief Benjamin Witt said, urging anyone who suspects animal abuse to contact authorities.
