No. 20 ranked URI (4-1, 2-0 CAA Football) stormed back from not one, but two 14-point deficits to snatch a heart-stopping 46-44 double-overtime win against Hampton on Saturday! The Rams fought through penalties, turnovers, and a relentless Hampton squad, but they refused to quit. QB Devin Farrell came off the bench like a man on a mission, throwing for 247 yards, 2 touchdowns, and scoring the game-winning 2-point conversion to complete the stunning comeback! 🔹 Malik Grant was unstoppable, rushing for 180 yards and finally punching in the game-tying TD with 24 seconds left in regulation. 🔹 Deon Silas racked up 2 TDs, while Greg Gaines III came up clutch in OT with a diving touchdown grab. 🔹 The defense showed up when it mattered most, logging 13 tackles for loss and making big stops in the double OT period. The Rams are now 6-0 in OT games since 2020, and this win just adds to their legend. On October 7, 1966 the most controversial event in On October 7, 1966 the most controversial event in Doris Duke‘s entire life occurred at her Rough Point estate here in Newport, RI. Doris Duke and her interior designer Eduardo Tirella were leaving Rough Point in a station wagon to head out to dinner. When Tirella left the car to open the huge iron gates to the estate, Duke slid over to the driver’s seat to pull the car out of the gates. Doris Duke “accidentally” accelerated the station wagon and hit Tirella with the car, dragging him across Bellevue Avenue where he was crushed against a tree, instantly killing him. According to Newport Chief of Police Joseph A. Radice, “All that she can remember is that the car sped forward and he was standing in the center of the gate.” Though there were rumors that the pair had been arguing, Doris Duke was not charged with murder and Eduardo Tirella’s death was recorded as an accident with Chief Radice saying “There is no cause to prefer charges against Miss Duke and as far as this department is concerned this case is closed.” * Within a week of accident, Duke gave $25,000 towards the restoring of the Cliff Walk. * It is rumored that deal for the Newport Restoration Foundation was struck that night. * Five months later Chief Radice retired from the force. This one-day, 36-hole event saw Englishman Horace Rawlins shoot a total score of 173, beating Scotsman Willie Dunn by just two strokes. His prize? A whopping $150 — which might sound like chump change, but that’s about $3,500 in today’s cash. Rawlins wasn’t just pocketing some pocket change though — he became the first-ever U.S. Open champion. While modern winners take home millions, back then, it was all about pride, skill, and maybe a little luck on Newport’s storied greens.
