URI revs up effort to bring custom license plate to Rhode Island drivers

The University of Rhode Island wants to bring Rhody pride to the open road.

URI is launching an effort to create a custom license plate through the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles’ charity plate program, which supports nonprofit organizations while letting drivers show off their affiliations.

The proposed plate would feature the University’s name and a signature image, giving alumni, students, faculty, and fans a chance to display their connection to URI — and support a good cause.

“Rhode Island alumni, students, faculty, staff, and fans all share a profound passion for URI,” said Matthew McDonald, URI’s vice president for communications and marketing. “We are excited to launch this initiative… while also supporting our students and our role as the state’s flagship university.”

Before any plates hit the streets, however, the University must demonstrate sufficient interest. State rules require a minimum number of pre-commitments to move forward.

To that end, URI has launched an interest form, inviting the public to show support and offer input on the design. The final plate will be developed by the University’s communications and marketing team with help from students and faculty to ensure it’s bold, recognizable, and DMV-approved.

If the effort gains traction, URI expects to start taking formal applications and collecting fees later this year. The plates would be available to any Rhode Island driver.
