Newport Police Chief Ryan Duffy addressed concerns

Newport Police Chief Ryan Duffy addressed concerns Monday regarding the department’s use of force during arrests at Newport’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade, particularly a widely circulated video showing officers arresting two teenage boys on Thames Street.

Duffy said an internal review determined that the officers involved followed department policy and that no violations occurred.

The video, which surfaced on social media, shows officers restraining the teenagers amid a large crowd. Some viewers questioned whether the force used was necessary, prompting the department to conduct a formal review.

Out of the 80 people arrested, 16 were taken into custody, while 64 received arrest citations for various offenses, ranging from open container violations to DUI and assault.

The Breakdown:
* 87 total charges
* 47 open container violations
* 14 underage drinking offenses
* 1 DUI
* 8 disorderly conduct charges
* 7 cases of public urination
* 4 simple assaults
* 4 obstruction charges
* 2 counts of resisting arrest

In addition, three underage partiers were slapped with a slew of charges, including disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, simple assault, and possession of alcohol.
