State’s Heavy Equipment Deployed as Newport Launches 24/7 Dig-Out, Towing to Be ‘Strictly Enforced’

Newport is bringing in the big guns.

Heavy equipment on loan from the State is now rolling through the City of Newport as crews scramble to claw back streets buried under snow in what officials say will be a multi-day, round-the-clock operation.

The first priority: reopening roads in the Yachting Village and the Lower Thames Street corridor — two of the city’s busiest and most business-critical areas — before fanning out into neighborhoods citywide.

But here’s the catch: Move your car — or it will be moved for you.

A mandatory parking ban remains in effect on all designated snow emergency routes, with one exception — the southbound side of Broadway. Everywhere else, towing will be strictly enforced, officials warned.

“This is a 24-hour operation,” the City said in a notice, urging residents not to wait. “If you have a car parked on a parking ban street, please move it now.”

🚨 Streets Impacted by the Parking Ban:

Annandale Road
Bedlow Avenue
Bellevue Avenue (from Kay Street to Bowery Street)
Bliss Road
Coggeshall Avenue
East Bowery Street
Farewell Street
Friendship Street
Gibbs Avenue
Gould Street
Kay Street
Powell Avenue
Spring Street
Summer Street
Thames Street
Third Street
Upper Broadway
Van Zandt Avenue (from J.T. Connell Memorial Road to Malbone Road)
Warner Street
Washington Square
Washington Street
West Marlborough Street
West Narragansett Avenue
William Street

City officials say clearing these arteries is critical to restoring normal traffic flow, emergency access, and business activity.

Bottom line: If your car is on the list, move it — or risk a tow.
