History lovers and curious minds have a new reason History lovers and curious minds have a new reason to visit Fort Adams this summer: for the first time ever, the iconic military landmark is opening its underground listening tunnels to the public as part of its self-guided tour experience.

The narrow, brick-lined tunnels — once used by soldiers in the 19th century to detect enemy intruders — have long fascinated visitors. Now, guests can walk the very paths that protected the fort from beneath, adding a thrilling new chapter to Fort Adams’ rich story.

“This is a major addition to our offering here at Fort Adams,” said Paul Marshall, Director at Fort Adams Trust. “Opening the listening tunnels to self-guided visitors allows us to share a hidden piece of military history in an immersive, unforgettable way.”

The expansion was made possible thanks in part to a grant from Ocean State Charities Trust. Their funding supported new safety upgrades, interpretive signage, and educational materials to help guide visitors through the dimly lit tunnels, offering insight into their purpose and construction.

The listening tunnels are now included with general admission to the self-guided tour and are open during regular hours. Visitors can also choose guided tours for a deeper dive into the fort’s storied past.
