PAWTUCKET, R.I. — A father shot and killed members PAWTUCKET, R.I. — A father shot and killed members of his own family during a high school hockey game Monday afternoon at Lynch Arena before turning the gun on himself, authorities said.

Two people — including a young girl — were killed. Three other family members remain in critical condition at a hospital. The gunman also died at the scene.

Police said the shooting erupted around 2:30 p.m. in the stands as the high school game was underway, sending players and spectators diving for cover.

Investigators confirmed the victims were the shooter’s wife and children and are investigating the case as a domestic incident.

A livestream of the game captured the chaos as approximately 11 shots rang out inside the arena. Players scrambled from the bench, some abandoning their skates as they pushed through exits. Others vaulted over the boards and rushed toward locker rooms while spectators dropped to the floor.

Witnesses said a bystander wrestled one gun from the suspect, but he allegedly had a second weapon.

Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves said one child was pronounced dead inside the arena. Another family member later died at a hospital. Three others remain hospitalized in critical condition.

City officials said there is no ongoing threat and no additional suspects are being sought.

Schools participating in the tournament moved quickly to reassure families. St. Raphael Academy said it had been told none of its students were injured. Coventry’s superintendent confirmed all students were accounted for. Johnston Public Schools said its student-athlete and a spectator were safe.

The investigation remains ongoing.
UPDATE: Two dead. A young girl was killed, four UPDATE: Two dead.

A young girl was killed, four people were hospitalized and the suspected gunman is dead after a shooting Monday afternoon during a high school hockey game at Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, authorities said.

The gunfire erupted around 2 p.m. at the indoor rink on Andrew D. Ferland Way during a matchup between the Coventry-Johnston co-op team and the St. Raphael–Providence Country Day–North Providence–North Smithfield co-op team.

The Pawtucket mayor’s office confirmed one juvenile victim was killed and four others were injured. The suspected shooter died at the scene. Police said they are not searching for additional suspects.

Witnesses reported shots coming from the stands behind one of the team benches, sending players and spectators scrambling for safety. An employee at a nearby Walgreens told local media that people ran into the store in panic, reporting an active shooting. Staff called 911 and temporarily closed the business.

Branden Mello, sports editor for the Woonsocket Call and Pawtucket Times, reported that a North Smithfield father intervened during the chaos, allegedly grabbing a gun from the shooter. Witnesses said the individual had a second weapon. Authorities have not publicly confirmed those details.

Preliminary information reported by ABC News indicates the gunman fatally shot himself after the incident.

Coventry Superintendent Don Cowart emailed families, calling it a “serious reported incident” and saying students were secured in multiple locations while officials worked to determine the status of all individuals.

Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee said in a statement: “We are actively monitoring the shooting at Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket. I just spoke with Mayor Grebien as well as RI State Police who are working with local law enforcement.”

As of late afternoon, the conditions of the four hospitalized victims had not been released. Investigators remained at the arena as authorities continued to gather information.
