Few American cities can match the presidential ped Few American cities can match the presidential pedigree of Newport, RI.

From the founding of the republic to the modern political era, the City-by-the-Sea has welcomed commanders-in-chief for historic speeches, summer retreats and pivotal national moments.

Washington’s Promise of Religious Liberty

The tradition began in August 1790, when George Washington visited Newport to mark Rhode Island’s ratification of the U.S. Constitution. Accompanied by Thomas Jefferson and other dignitaries, Washington attended civic receptions and dined at Town Hall.

The visit is best remembered for his letter to the Hebrew Congregation at Touro Synagogue, assuring the nation would “give to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance.” Written a year before the Bill of Rights was ratified, the message became a cornerstone of American religious freedom.

FDR and a City at War

In 1940, Franklin D. Roosevelt traveled to the Naval War College as World War II loomed. A former assistant secretary of the Navy, Roosevelt reinforced Newport’s role in shaping U.S. maritime strategy.

Eisenhower’s Summer White House

From 1957 to 1960, Dwight D. Eisenhower established a “Summer White House” at Eisenhower House at Fort Adams State Park. During his time in Newport, he signed the Civil Rights Act of 1957 and ordered federal troops to Little Rock to enforce school integration. He also logged dozens of rounds at Newport Country Club.

Kennedy’s Newport Ties

No president is more closely linked to Newport than John F. Kennedy. He married Jacqueline Bouvier at St. Mary’s Church in 1953 and later used Hammersmith Farm as his Summer White House from 1961 to 1963, hosting dignitaries and conducting official business overlooking Newport Harbor.

Modern-Day Visits

Richard Nixon spoke at an OCS graduation in 1971. Bill Clinton visited in 1998 to discuss environmental initiatives, followed by George W. Bush in 2007 at the Naval War College. In 2014, Barack Obama attended a fundraiser on Ocean Drive with Mayor Harry Winthrop.

For more than two centuries, Newport has served as a summer refuge, naval hub and political stage — a coastal city woven into the fabric of the American presidency.
On Great Island, where the bay sets the pace and t On Great Island, where the bay sets the pace and the light changes by the hour, 17 Goose Island Road is a turnkey coastal retreat that feels both polished and easy. Fully remodeled, the 672-square-foot cottage lives larger than its footprint thanks to soaring ceilings with exposed beams and expansive windows that capture water views from multiple angles.

A fireplace brings instant warmth for shoulder-season weekends, while the updated kitchen is designed for real living and effortless entertaining, with bar seating, new appliances, and a gas cooktop. The home is a true one-bedroom, one-bath escape, complete with a full-size stackable washer/dryer for stay-a-while convenience.

Outside is the main event: a huge deck overlooking the water with a hot tub and outdoor shower, made for post-paddle rinse-offs, salt-air evenings, and stargazing. A large yard, ample off-street parking, and a new oversized shed add the kind of function that makes island life feel refreshingly simple.

For those looking ahead, there’s potential to add a second floor, creating future flexibility and additional space. And when you want to plug back in, you’re minutes from Narragansett Town Beach and close to renowned local restaurants, with Providence, Newport, and TF Green Airport all about 30 minutes away.
