The Boston Red Sox are one win away from the Ameri The Boston Red Sox are one win away from the American League Division Series after toppling the rival New York Yankees 3-1 in Game 1 of their best-of-three Wild Card Series on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.

Left-hander Garrett Crochet stole the spotlight in his first career postseason start, striking out 11 across 7 ⅔ innings. He allowed just four hits and one run—a second-inning solo shot by Anthony Volpe—while throwing a career-high 117 pitches. Crochet finished his outing with a 100.2 mph fastball that froze Austin Wells for a called strike three.

For most of the night, Yankees starter Max Fried kept Boston in check, delivering 6 ⅓ scoreless innings before leaving to a standing ovation. But the Red Sox finally broke through in the seventh against reliever Luke Weaver. Ceddanne Rafaela worked an 11-pitch walk, Nick Sogard followed with a double, and pinch-hitter Masataka Yoshida delivered a two-run single up the middle to put Boston ahead for good.

Alex Bregman added insurance in the ninth with an RBI double in his 100th career postseason game. Still, the Yankees made it interesting, loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth. Closer Aroldis Chapman steadied himself, striking out Giancarlo Stanton, retiring Jazz Chisholm Jr. on a fly out, and fanning Trent Grisham to end it.

With the victory, Boston holds a 1-0 series lead. History favors the Red Sox: teams that win Game 1 of a Wild Card series have advanced 18 of 20 times. One more win at Yankee Stadium will punch their ticket to face the top-seeded Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS.

A two-day program this fall will highlight how Fre A two-day program this fall will highlight how French art, architecture, design and cuisine shaped the lives of Newport’s Gilded Age elite.

‘The Newport Symposium: The French Influence in Newport,’ hosted by the Preservation Society of Newport County, will take place Nov. 6-7 at Rosecliff and Marble House.

The event will spotlight how America’s wealthiest families drew inspiration from French aristocracy. Architect Richard Morris Hunt modeled Alva Vanderbilt’s Marble House on Versailles’ Petit Trianon. Horace Trumbauer’s Elms was inspired by the Château d’Asnières, while Stanford White’s Rosecliff incorporated details from the Grand Trianon. French furniture maker Jules Allard et Fils furnished many Newport “cottages,” and chefs brought authentic French cuisine to the city’s summer season.

The symposium will feature lectures, tours and exclusive access to the exhibition Richard Morris Hunt: In a New Light at Rosecliff. Attendees will visit Preservation Society properties connected to the talks, including The Breakers, Marble House, The Elms, Chateau-sur-Mer and Ochre Court.

Keynote speaker Mathieu Deldicque, chief curator and museum director of France’s Château de Chantilly, will join an international roster of experts. Other speakers include Dr. Justine De Young of the Fashion Institute of Technology, Bob Shaw, production designer for HBO’s The Gilded Age, interior textile historian Natalie Larson, and several curators, historians and fellows associated with the Preservation Society.

Tickets are available at newportmansions.org.

Two men were arrested after a violent confrontatio Two men were arrested after a violent confrontation at East Greenwich Country Club earlier this month, police said.

Officers responded to the golf club around 7:23 p.m. on Sept. 19 after reports of a disturbance. When they arrived, they found a man with injuries to the back and left side of his head.

The victim told police the incident began after a group behind him hit a golf ball toward the green where his group was playing. The situation escalated into shouting and swearing before one man, later identified as 20-year-old Cameron Chase, allegedly waved a putter in the air and struck him in the back of the head.

Chase ran into the woods but was later spotted walking on Division Road and taken into custody. He was charged with felony assault and disorderly conduct. The injured golfer was transported to Kent County Hospital for treatment.

Police said the dispute continued when another golfer, Joseph Folco, threw Chase’s golf clubs — worth more than $4,000 — into a nearby lake. Folco was arrested and charged with vandalism and disorderly conduct.

Chase told officers he had been swinging the club in self-defense. Both men were arraigned after their arrests.
