The second-largest crane ship on the planet has de The second-largest crane ship on the planet has departed Newport Harbor and is now steaming toward New York waters — carrying with it the next wave of destruction.

The SSCV Thialf — a steel leviathan measuring 661.5 feet long, 290 feet wide, and 472 feet high — slipped out of Narragansett Bay en route to begin foundation work for the Empire Wind project, a controversial offshore wind installation that critics say threatens to decimate marine life and irreversibly damage our ocean ecosystems.

For years, environmental groups and fishermen have sounded the alarm. They warn of catastrophic disruption to fragile marine ecosystems — migratory species thrown off course, fisheries destabilized, habitats scarred beyond repair. Yet the warnings go unanswered, as politicians turn a blind eye, drowned beneath hollow promises of “progress.”

Fishermen and watchdogs alike have pleaded for a pause — or at least an honest review — of the mounting ecological toll. Seismic testing and seabed gouging from these industrial-scale wind operations, they say, wipe out plankton, throw marine food chains into chaos, and drive whales and dolphins to strand and die.

But the response from government and industry has been chillingly consistent: ignore, deflect, proceed.

Now, the Thialf’s departure marks more than a construction milestone — it signals the next chapter in what many fear is an environmental crisis in the making. What’s sold as clean energy looks more like oceanic colonization — a fleet of floating machinery carving through our seafloor while marine life vanishes in its wake.

After four grueling days and 25 races, Corinthian After four grueling days and 25 races, Corinthian Yacht Club (CYC) emerged victorious in the 2025 Team Racing World Championship, finishing with a dominant 20-point performance. Battling sustained 20-knot winds and rough seas, the Marblehead-based squad held firm from Day 1 and lost just five races, cementing their place at the top of the global field.

Six teams advanced to the final gold fleet round robin: New York Yacht Club (USA), Kiwi Racing (NZL), Newport Harbor Yacht Club (USA), Baltimore SC (IRE), Corinthian Yacht Club (USA), and West Kirby Hawks (GBR). CYC topped the standings, while a tiebreak left Kiwi Racing in second, Baltimore SC in third, and West Kirby Hawks in fourth—underscoring the international flavor of this long-awaited event.

CYC’s success was no accident. Led by veteran skippers Will Bailey and Tim Wadlow, the team trained intensely in the months leading up to the regatta, competing in high-level events and fine-tuning their 2v2 strategy. “It was total combat out there,” said Bailey. “Every race was a fistfight, especially against the New York Yacht Club.”

Kiwi Racing clawed back from a slow start, finding their rhythm by mid-regatta.

“We built momentum every day,” said skipper Jordan Stevenson. “It was a steep learning curve, but we improved the most, and that was our goal.”

Baltimore SC also impressed, leveraging years of team chemistry. “It was a team effort, and we’re proud of how we raced,” said skipper Johnny Durcan.

Host team New York Yacht Club fell short of expectations but embraced the new format. “CYC was just better this week,” admitted skipper Clay Bischoff. “But 2v2 is growing on us—it’s intense and fun.”

With teams from five continents and a revived format, the 2025 championship marked a triumphant return for the sport. “It was team racing at its best,” said co-chair Susan Daly. “We’re already excited for what’s next.”
