A line of thunderstorms swept over Fort Adams Frid A line of thunderstorms swept over Fort Adams Friday afternoon, forcing the @newportfolkfest to hit pause for about an hour. Around 3:30 p.m., organizers told the 10,000 people packed into the sold-out event to shelter in place as heavy rain moved across the bay.

By just before 5 p.m., the skies began to clear and the gates reopened. That’s when Kenny Loggins stepped onstage and helped the crowd shake off the storm. His performance of “Danny’s Song” hit exactly the right note, with the soft, familiar melody cutting through the damp air and bringing more than a few tears.

The break in the weather felt like a reset, and as the sun pushed back through the clouds, the festival slipped back into its groove. The Newport Folk Festival continues through the weekend, with Saturday and Sunday promising more of the music that’s made the iconic gathering a summer tradition.
