The Rhode Island House of Representatives voted 43 The Rhode Island House of Representatives voted 43-28 Thursday to ban the sale and possession of certain “assault” weapons, advancing one of the most hotly debated gun control measures in U.S. history. Sponsored by Rep. Jason Knight, the bill would outlaw specific semi-automatic rifles, and pistols, effective 7/1/26. Exemptions would apply to law enforcement, military personnel, federally licensed dealers, and those who legally possess the firearms prior to the ban’s effective date. “Assault weapons are the tool of choice for mass shooters,” said Knight. “Their purpose is to maximize carnage. We don’t need them in Rhode Island.” A voluntary certificate program would allow grandfathered owners to obtain proof from police that their firearm is legal. Police would be prohibited from retaining records, easing fears of a de facto registry. Grandfathered weapons could only be possessed at home, businesses, gun ranges, or during transport to licensed events or dealers. The vote drew condemnation from the RI Republican Party. Chairman Joe Powers called the legislation “a blatant attack on the Constitution and an alarming escalation in the erosion of individual liberties.” “This isn’t about guns—it’s about rights,” Powers said. “They’re hoping you won’t notice your rights being stripped away, one inch at a time.” Powers warned that such laws pave the way for broader government control, citing Venezuela, Cuba, and the former Soviet Union. “History shows what happens when governments disarm their people,” he said. “Dissent disappears. People disappear.” He urged Rhode Islanders to take a stand. “Today it’s your firearms. Tomorrow it’ll be your speech, your faith, and your property. This is a fight for the soul of our state.” The bill, backed by all five general officers, is the final major recommendation from a gun safety panel formed after the 2018 Parkland school shooting. RI has already enacted measures banning bump stocks, large-capacity magazines, and unsecured firearms. If the Senate approves the measure and Gov. McKee signs the legislation, RI will become the 11th state to implement an assault weapons ban. #guns #rhodeisland #newportbuzz

On Thursday, radio personalities from The Greg Hill Show descended on The Landing for a meet and greet. Patrick Kilroy also extended a heartfelt offer to support the employees of @matunuckoysterbar. For every Miller Lite sold, he donated $10 to aid his fellow hospitality workers affected by the devastating fire that closed the popular seaside restaurant on May 20. Kate DeCosta praised P.K. for supporting hospitality workers. “People have kids, car payments, and mortgages,” DeCosta said. “If I didn’t have my next paycheck, I’d be in trouble. We need to do what we can.” Lee Caouette said he was thinking of the 300 employees who lost their jobs at Matunuck Oyster Bar and recalled how the restaurant’s owner, Perry Raso, started as a fisherman and built a thriving business. By 7 a.m. Friday morning, there wasn’t an empty seat in The Lobster Bar as Greg Hill, Jermaine Wiggins, Courtney Cox, and Chris Curtis went live on air. One fan even flew in from Chicago, while locals like Sid Abruzzi, Tim Smith, Melissa Turner, and Steve Taylor showed up in support. The Greg Hill Show team stayed at OceanCliff the night before and raved about the hospitality they received. Courtney Cox said she was especially touched to find gifts from CK Bradley and Farmaesthetics in her room. Mayor Charlie Holder presented a key to the City of Newport to Wiggins, who was visibly moved and declared, “We’re partying now—I’m bringing the boys from the city down. I feel like a Rhode Islander now.” Mayor Holder also delivered an official proclamation declaring May 30 “The Greg Hill Show Day” in the City of Newport and thanked Hill and his team for their charitable efforts through The Greg Hill Foundation.
