A devastating fire tore through an assisted living A devastating fire tore through an assisted living facility in Fall River Sunday night, leaving nine people dead and dozens more injured.

Crews were called to The Gabriel House on Oliver Street around 9:40 p.m. and arrived to find heavy fire pouring from the front of the building. Residents—many elderly and unable to walk—were seen hanging from windows, desperately waiting to be rescued.

“This is an unfathomable tragedy for the families involved and the Fall River community,” said Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon. “Our hearts go out to those who are grieving this morning.”

Roughly 70 people lived at the facility. Firefighters and police officers raced inside the smoke-filled building to save as many as possible. According to Fall River Police, several officers were first on scene and carried out a dozen non-ambulatory residents before fire crews arrived.

The fire escalated to five alarms, with 50 firefighters responding—30 of them off-duty. Five suffered minor injuries.

Many residents were transported to local hospitals in varying conditions. Officials confirmed multiple fatalities but have not released an exact number as of Monday morning.

“This will be a long investigation,” said officials, who noted that the fire’s cause remains under investigation by local and state agencies.

A family notification center has been set up at St. Anne’s Hospital chapel. Families seeking information should enter through the Emergency Room or call 508-674-5741.

The bodies of two brothers from Stoughton, Massach The bodies of two brothers from Stoughton, Massachusetts, who went missing Saturday morning while fishing off the coast of Little Compton, have been recovered, officials confirmed Sunday.

The victims have been identified as 31-year-old Valdir A. Centeio and 27-year-old Aldino A. Centeio. The brothers were last seen fishing from the rocks near Warren’s Point Beach Club when one of them slipped and fell into the water. The other immediately jumped in to try to save him.

A third man who was with there also entered the water in an effort to help but was unable to reach the brothers. He managed to climb back onto the rocks and was assisted by a lifeguard and rescue swimmer.

The 911 call came in around 8:30 a.m. Saturday, prompting a large-scale response from the Little Compton Fire Department, Rhode Island DEM, the U.S. Coast Guard, and marine units from nearby towns including Middletown, Newport, and Tiverton.

Search crews worked for more than six hours Saturday. The Coast Guard deployed side-scan sonar before suspending their portion of the search around 3 p.m. and turning the operation over to local agencies.

On Sunday morning, just after 11 a.m., Little Compton Fire & Rescue and a DEM vessel recovered both bodies in the water near the area where the brothers were last seen. The Rhode Island State Medical Examiner’s Office has taken custody of the remains.

Our prayers go out to their families.
