In an historic ceremony Wednesday, Governor Dan Mc In an historic ceremony Wednesday, Governor Dan McKee unveiled the Independent Man statue on display in the State House following its temporary removal from the dome for the first time in nearly 50 years and for only the second time in the state’s history. During the ceremony, the Governor also announced that the Independent Man will be on display at the State House until January 8th for the public to enjoy before it is transported for repair and restoration. Where, When and How to Visit the Independent Man December 6 – January 8: The Independent Man will be on display in the main entryway on the first floor of the State House (82 Smith Street Providence, RI) between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Visitors can park in the larger Smith Street parking lot adjacent to the State House and follow the signage to the employee entrance. Please note: the main entrance on Smith Street remains closed while restoration crews continue cleaning and restoring the building’s façade. The U.S. Navy has awarded $146,778,932 to design a The U.S. Navy has awarded $146,778,932 to design and build a new NOAA facility at Naval Station Newport. This facility will eventually be the new home of NOAA’s Marine Operations Center – Atlantic. While the details of the facility’s design are still being finalized, requirements include having a pier that will accommodate four large vessels, a floating dock for smaller vessels, space for vessel repairs and parking and a building to be used for shoreside support and as a warehouse. 🚨 Kylie Swain, 28, of South Weymouth, MA, the b 🚨 Kylie Swain, 28, of South Weymouth, MA, the bride involved in Newport's infamous September Wedding Day Melee pleaded contendere to two charges of Simple Assault and one charge of Disorderly Conduct on Tuesday in Newport County District Court. Nolo contendere is a plea where the defendant accepts conviction as though a guilty plea had been entered but does not admit guilt. Judge Colleen Hastings sentenced Swain to 1 year probation, 25 hours of community service, a $400 fine paid to the Violent Crimes Indemnity Fund, and court costs. A second member of the Wedding Day Melee also pleaded nolo to charges. Olivia Costello, 21, of Milton, MA, pleaded to charges of Simple Assault, Resisting Arrest, Disorderly Conduct, and Obstruction. Judge Hastings sentenced her to 25 hours of community service and court costs. Judge Hastings also filed the charges, meaning the charges will be wiped from Costello's record provided she stay out of trouble for one year. Four other members of the melee who are facing felony charges still have pending cases. The four are: 1. David Onik of Barrington, RI 2. Rachael Onik of Barrington, RI 3. Our old friend Matt Braman, Rogers High School Class of 1991, was confirmed by the United States Senate Tuesday for promotion to the rank of U.S. Army Brigadier General. He joins his Rogers High School classmate Jay Janaros who was promoted last year to Brigadier General in the U.S. Air Force. Braman’s promotion comes after Senator Tommy Tuberville dropped his monthslong blockade on military promotions. “In the end, this was all pointless. Senator Tuberville, and the Republicans who stood with him, needlessly hurt hundreds of servicemembers and military families and threatened our national security — all to push a partisan agenda. I hope no one forgets what he did,” Biden said in a statement released by the White House. “Senator Tuberville’s actions have been an affront to the United States military and the Senate,” said U.S. Senator Jack Reed(D-RI), the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee. “He has jeopardized our national security and abused the rights afforded to all Senators. No Senator should ever attempt to advance their own partisan agenda on the backs of our troops like this again.” Braman is a seasoned special operations aviator and is currently serving as the Deputy Commanding General of the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum.
