Cranston police are investigating a fatal hit-and- Cranston police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run that left a woman dead early Sunday along Scituate Avenue. Officers and firefighters responded around 4:15 a.m. Jan. 11 to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle near 525 Scituate Ave., according to the Cranston Police Department. A female pedestrian was found with catastrophic injuries after being discovered by an Amazon employee, who called 911. Despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:23 a.m. The victim has not yet been positively identified, pending notification of next of kin. The investigation is being conducted with assistance from the Rhode Island Office of the Attorney General and the Rhode Island State Medical Examiner’s Office. Crash reconstructionists determined the woman was struck while in the westbound breakdown lane and was thrown about 42 feet. Debris and vehicle components recovered at the scene were consistent with a pedestrian strike. Around 5:18 a.m., a Cranston resident told investigators that Richard D’Amico, 30, had earlier said he believed he hit something on Scituate Avenue—possibly a deer or an object—while driving a 2023 Toyota Tacoma. Police later located the truck at D’Amico’s residence and observed damage consistent with evidence from the crash scene. After reviewing license-plate reader data, examining physical evidence, and conducting interviews, investigators concluded the vehicle was involved and failed to stop. Police said there is no record D’Amico contacted 911 or reported the crash. An arrest warrant charged D’Amico with duty to stop in an accident resulting in death. The truck was seized for further examination. D’Amico turned himself in Sunday evening, was arraigned before a bail commissioner, and released on $5,000 surety bail. His next court date is April 1 at the Third District Court. The investigation remains ongoing. Newport Police Chief Ryan Duffy is officially clim Newport Police Chief Ryan Duffy is officially climbing the statewide law-enforcement ladder. Duffy was sworn in Saturday as Vice President of the Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association during a ceremony in Warwick, marking another milestone in a 25-year rise that began on the streets of Newport. The January 11 event installed the Association’s 2026 Executive Board and drew top brass from across the state, along with political heavyweights and judges. But for Aquidneck Island, the spotlight landed squarely on Duffy — a hometown cop who worked his way up the ranks the old-fashioned way. Duffy joined the Newport Police Department in December 2000 and steadily advanced through investigator, sergeant, lieutenant, and captain before taking over as acting chief in early 2023. He was formally named chief that June. Last year, he served on the RIPCA board as Sergeant-at-Arms — now he’s second-in-command statewide. The new board is led by Barrington Police Chief Michael E. Correia as president, with Duffy helping shape policy priorities that include traffic safety, officer wellness, and public trust in law enforcement. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley delivered the keynote address, praising the unity of Rhode Island police departments, particularly in moments of crisis. U.S. Sen. Jack Reed and Rep. Seth Magaziner also addressed the gathering. For Newport, Duffy’s elevation is more than ceremonial — it puts one of the city’s own at the table where statewide policing decisions get made. #newportri #newportpolice #newportbuzz
