Michael Cadenazzi, a 1991 Rogers High School gradu Michael Cadenazzi, a 1991 Rogers High School graduate, was confirmed Thursday by the U.S. Senate as assistant secretary of defense for industrial base policy. The chamber voted 52-47 to approve his nomination, part of a sweeping package of confirmations for President Donald Trump’s nominees. The confirmation came after Senate Republicans invoked the “nuclear option” to speed up votes, citing what they called unprecedented Democratic obstruction. In one series of votes, 48 Trump nominees were approved, including Cadenazzi, Kimberly Guilfoyle as ambassador to Greece, and Callista Gingrich as ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein. “Munitions production is at the top of my priority list,” Cadenazzi told the Senate Armed Services Committee during his confirmation hearing, stressing the need for “predictable and stable defense budgets” to strengthen the U.S. defense industrial base. He also warned that decades of de-industrialization, fragile supply chains, and inconsistent investment have left the U.S. vulnerable, including reliance on foreign sources for critical components. Unpredictable budgets, he said, hinder long-term planning, stifle innovation, and discourage private sector engagement. Cadenazzi brings more than 25 years of experience in aerospace, defense, and government, including as managing director for EY Americas’ Aerospace & Defense consulting. A Navy veteran, he served a decade as a cryptologic officer in Asia and Europe. He also holds engineering degrees from Tulane University and the Naval Postgraduate School and has launched startups in AI, analytics, and technical services. Notably, Cadenazzi is one of three members of Rogers High School’s Class of 1991 to rise to senior national defense positions. His classmates include Army Gen. Matthew Braman and Air Force Brig. Gen. Jason Janaros (Ret.), underscoring the remarkable military pedigree of that graduating class. The DOD has 19 assistant secretaries who oversee different policy areas. Cadenazzi will now lead the office responsible for ensuring the resilience and readiness of the defense industrial base at a time when munitions production and supply chain stability are in sharp focus.
A Rhode Island basketball coach is facing charges A Rhode Island basketball coach is facing charges after cops say he punched an event organizer and later pulled a knife on a referee at a youth game. Providence police said Christopher Cherry, 37, of Warwick, turned himself in Wednesday on an active arrest warrant. The incident happened Saturday after a basketball game in Providence. According to police, Cherry punched organizer Isaiah Fuller in the face before allegedly pulling out a knife and swinging it at a referee. No one was seriously hurt. The incident was captured on video, which has since circulated online, and appears to show Cherry holding a knife inside the gym. Cherry was arraigned Wednesday afternoon on felony assault, two counts of simple assault, and disorderly conduct. A judge set bail at $2,500 and ordered him to stay away from the victims. The nonprofit owns 80 properties, including 70 colonial homes that are rented to tenant stewards and carefully maintained by carpenters, painters, and craftspeople. For nearly two decades, NRF trustees have hosted the Doris Duke Historic Preservation Awards, with the 19th edition held at Rough Point on Sept. 5. The awards encourage local property owners to follow Doris Duke’s lead in preserving Newport’s distinctive character. This year, committee members Edith McBean, Ann Mencoff, Lynn Ceglie, Jill Chin, Mikel Folcarelli, Leslie Jones, Sue Petrovas, John Peixinho, and Jeroen van den Hurk reviewed a record number of nominations before selecting four awardees for their thoughtful adaptation and preservation of historic properties. Laura Glazier, who received the Award for Restoration with Adaptive Reuse, said it was a “lovely surprise” to learn that she and her husband had been chosen. The nomination was submitted by Dorienne and Mohamad Farzan of Newport Architecture, with construction work by the Damon Company on the Hope Street Barn. Michael Semenza spoke enthusiastically about Ochre Court’s Cignaroli Ceiling Painting, which earned recognition for Restoration and Engagement. “Student and community engagement were at the forefront of this project, which we first started discussing in 2015,” said Semenza, crediting the Noreen Stonor Drexel Cultural & Historic Preservation program for giving students the opportunity to participate in the mural’s restoration. Bernard Chiu accepted the award for Excellence in Craftsmanship for the restoration of Honeysuckle Lodge Carriage House. The project team included architect Madeline Melchert of @hullcovedesign and @kirbyperkins Construction. Adaptive reuse was also celebrated when Susie Matthews transformed a former 1930s automotive service station into OVERLAP, a vibrant community art gallery. Estes Twombly + Titrington, Joseph Scotti Construction, and Martha Moore Landscape Architect were recognized for preserving the surrounding streetscape while enhancing the vitality of the neighborhood. #buzzingaroundnewport #newportri #newportbuzz
